Can you waterproof leather?

All this talk about waterproof gloves got me thinking.

When I was in Canada I saw a spray-paste that was applied to a boot and it made it waterproof… it was actually in a bowl of water to prove how waterproof it became.

Does anyone know how effective it is?

If it is cant you just spray it on normal leather i.e gloves and hay presto!! waterproof gloves!

Unless this will ruin the leather and as a consequence its protective properties?

What do you think??

eg a product

(Wasp…? )

Doesnt Hein Gerike sell this? Im sure they tried to sell it to me when I was in there - if it wasnt there I’ve seen it magazines over here.

Im gonna buy some and do my boots, jacket and gloves

Leather starts off life waterproof (think: does your skin leak water when it rains?). Over time, and during the tanning process, it loses oils. Keeping the level of these oils topped up (with any decent leather cleaning/restoring/proofing products) will keep the leather waterproof. Only thing to pay particular attention to is areas of stitching, where the water will try its best to get between the stitches and leak through.

You can get w’proofing stuff from a bike shop, but also from a camping shop (the stuff they use for leather boots), or a horseriding shop or a proper shoe shop (not many of them around, but I work opposite one so that’s good for me).

Buy it where it’s cheapest.

so guess you can waterproof it then?

I had applied castor oil to my old leather jacket to bring it back to life, but not sure if that waterproofed it also… :ermm:

I suppose there is no point of trying to waterproof a perforated jacket!! :w00t:

Hehe, not a good idea mate. Buy yourself a good waterproofs instead…

technically it does - skin is a permeable membrane (hence your fingers prune up in the bath, and sweat can escape to cool etc).

Yes, but I think cells have to be alive foe those reactions to take place.

back on topic:

Just went to an outdoor store and asked about this:

They said you can get a wax that will waterproof leathers (to an extent) and also treat it so it doesnt crack…

they of course cant say about the protective qualities that we riders are also interested in.

more info on NikWax prioducts

It’s just like what happens to a pair of shoes. Wax/oil/polish will all nourish the leather (making it supple, so it won’t crack), and will fill the pores in the leather so it doesn’t leak water.

As the camping guys say, it may never be as w’proof as a rainsuit (but all the ones I’ve had have developed leaks over time anyway!), but it will be a lot better than if you don’t proof your leathers.

(Think walking boots: if you keep them in good nick then you’d happily walk through all sorts of water in them, but if you never clean and proof them then they soak up water and eventually leak it through).

have only tested my skin whilst it was still attached its true

Hope it stays that way

bump for Wasp

Alright alright i’m here:D

Of course you can waterproof leathers, there are lots of products available to do this but i find nikwax is the best, and it does help if you look after your leathers i.e clean them once a month and give them a good coating of nikwax make sure you put plenty into the seams as well…an it does work i spent a day in france in the p*ssing rain and i was the only one who was’nt soaked underneath:D

And again i HIGHLY reccomend astonish leather cleaner…top stuff and if your lucky you can get it in the 99p shops;)
