Can carbon deposits cause knocking?

Your knowledgeable thoughts on this please ladies and gents.I always thought that the fuel additives would remove carbon deposits in chunks which would then block the filters/injectors.

Eh? What filters?

Well it is wayyyyyyyy past my bedtime and I meant to say injectors - ive since edited it!

Well spotted though!

Still don’t get it mate, sorry.

All that goes through your injectors is fuel/air mixture.

Any microscopic carbon “chunks” are blown from the exhaust ports.

I know what you mean but I was reading on the net that some people claim that it does! Hard to see how but you never know. Maybe they were talking about cars? same principle though surely!

Still - that doesnt answer my first question - do you reckon that carbon deposits can cause knocking?

There are quite a few causes for “knocking”, one of them is a significant build up of carbon on the piston head and the head. It can also be caused by dodgy tuning. Most commonly it’s sh!t fuel from Tescos:)Why do you ask?

Knocking is also sometimes the result of two like minded adults meeting and taking a shine to one another  Sorry…Where’s me coat.

Mate, take the bike to Southern Cross and ask them to listen / have a look at it…Won’t cost you anything to just have 'em take a quick look. Ask for Matt and mention me.

If you leave there with a black eye…Don’t mention me again in future

Some of us riders of a certain age might remember this joke…

Knock Knock

Who’s There?

Honda:D

In the early 80’s Honda had a reputation for big ends made of cheese,

Thats Bonking Afro , think your been doing it wrong m8 unless…

What do you call it Westie ? :stuck_out_tongue: :D:w00t:

Hey Afro! Southern Cross said you still owed them money…I wouldnt show my face around there for a while:D

(The knocking still is very very faint, will get round to a tuned ear at some point though)

Daayum :crying:

I’ve just given them my R1 to service…No wonder Matt was so eager to take it in

The thing is…“Knocking” doesn’t really sound like knocking.

Real knocking (knock knock knock) is usually a sign of f***ed big end bearings.:w00t:

Carbon build up can cause a ‘pinking’ noise which is usually known as preignition. In such a case described it’s caused by the built up material holding enough heat to ignite the fresh fuel too early. Common in classic car engines not ragged enough by their owners :hehe: Very unusual in modern efficient bike engines in my experience

But as already said such unwanted matter just goes straight out the exhaust valve

I’ve noticed your bike has done 55K plus now Is the engine actually making a knocking sound mate?
