So far, of the ones I’ve met “good” and “financial adviser” in the same sentence is looking unlikely.

I’m not lookinhg for free, just one who doesn’t tell me he/she’s, well, sort of tell me, they are agents for XXXX and can only give advice of their products.

Please. I can read and on good days, nurse tells me, I still have the ability to read the commission and management fees of those companies bumf.

You could try Frederic/Frenchy on here, expecially if property related. Not sure what his username is now but hopefully somebody will be along in a while who does

Cheers guys,

I’ve done all my own research and I need just a sanity check to make sure my plan is the most tax efficient and if so get the right mortgage. But all the guys I’ve used in the past are only good at stating the obvious and flogging you the stuff that earns them the biggest commission.

My point.

What’s idependent about being on commission from a couple of companies?

I’ve got a good IFA if you want still, send me a pm. He specialises in medical professionals but maybe look at other business too?

I think there are also financial advisers who does not get commission from lenders, but they charge you around 1%.

We went to our Natwest financial advisors few weeks back and they gave us much better quote that I was able to find anywhere else. So don’t option out your own bank. No harm asking.

Also, can an IFA give me mortgage advice or do I need a mortgage advisor for that?

Three ways of doing it I reckon

  1. Engage an IFA - agree a fee and he charges you a fee for his independent advice (typically a few hundred quid)
  2. A Mortgage advisor advises you and makes a commission on what you buy (typically a few thousand quid)
  3. Buy the Sunday Times and the best deals are all listed. (Two quid - fixed)

Cheers for that…I have no problem figuring out the best deal on a mortgage but I have come up with a quite complicated scheme involving 3 properties…mortgaging and re-mortgaging and I need someone to look it over and see if it works or not…

Wasn’t meaning to be patronising…(sorry if I was - an occupational hazard)

Would defo go for the independent advice then - a tied advisor could make many 000s out of you and would possibly direct you to the deals that pay him the most, rather than the best for you. :w00t:

No worries bluelagos…didn’t think you were patronising just trying to give people as much info as I can so they can give me the best advice they can.

Thanks again

No worries - one bit of advice for anyone using an IFA - ask them to detail exactly how much commission they are receiving for any deal they are recommending and over what period…by law they have to tell you and you can negotiate with them if you think some of it shoud come your way  Unsurprisingly they need to be asked as this info is rarely offered.
