i.e., i only need buy one motor insurance for me, instead of insurance for different vehicles. i have 2 motor insurance, one for my car, the other for my motorbike. is that true i just need to buy one motor insurance covering both car and motorbike?
No. You need to have insurance for yourself on all vehicles you driver/ride .
Unlike some other European countries, insurance is on the driver of a specific vehicle, not the vehicle alone (i.e. the fact your friend has insurance on his car doesn’t mean you can drive it).
However, some insurance policies will state that you can drive/ride another vehicle on a third party basis only if you have consent from the vehicle owner. But this depends on your insurance policy so you need to check.

And tell you friend to get his facts straight. I had an accident with an driver who though it was ok to drive his partners car without being insured, and 13 months later, it’s still not resolved. He will go to court and I hope he will be severely punished.
Many thanks.so I should have separate insurance for my car and bike? the idea that i maight have paid an unnecessary motorbike insurance for a year almost gave me a heart attack.
I’ve never understood why you can buy a policy to cover several cars or one to cover several bikes but not a car and a bike. It would make sense wouldn’t it?
especially considering you cannot drive a car and ride a bike at the same time
you kinda can, or at least if you get them both from the same place you can haggle a discount, my old bike insurer (H and R) garenteed to beat any car insurance quote if you had bike cover with them
I think it was either Bennetts or Carole Nash did a policy for both car and bike together. When I got a quote off them the price was about 25% dearer than my best two quotes added togther!
I got two years no claims bonus on the bike from Norwich Union Direct becuase I had a car policy with them.
One of the big insurance companies used to do a “six wheel deal” (car and bike) policy but i don’t think it was cheep and it was a good while ago.

Your Still responsible for the vehicle your not driving hence another insurance.A grey area is being the owner of two cars for example and only insured on one so you could have permission from yourself to drive the uninsured one with the one insurance you do have. Would like to hear from someone in-the-know on this one.
The main reason why car and motorcycle insurances are separate is that it’s just easier and cheaper for the insurance company to keep the policies separate and give you a discount for having 2 policies with them.
As an example, when I came back to biking after a 10 year break, I had full no claims on my car policy but no-one would give me any no-claims on the bike. Coping with this in a joint policy just isn’t worth the effort.
A separate reason is that there are not many insurance companies who want a presence in both car and bike insurance.
As for having only one car insured, it’s a non-starter. Insurance companies are also clamping down on people who insure a car used by someone else, eg where parents insure their kids’ cars as the premium is so high for the latter.

Policies that allow you to drive/ride a second vehicle “for free” always specify that you have to be legally able to ride/drive it, you must have permission of the owner or keeper, and you must not own it yourself.
In practice what they are doing is giving you the third party cover you would have had if you were riding the bike you had insured with them. You are not using that cover as you are not riding your bike.

And the other vehicle also has to have valid insurance cover
I have tried to combine both car and bike.
I was told I need 2 different insurances for each bike and car. I can put more than one bike on a bike insurance and the same for car. but sadly not for both!
