Hi all. Was looking for a bit of advice for my first big bike. I’ve narrowed it down to two…a sensible option and a fun option. The two bikes in question are the MT-07 and the NC700S. I use the bike for commuting to work (20 miles round trip) so I know the NC700S would be the sensible option with its high MPG and tank storage…BUT…I keep being drawn to the MT-07. The reviews are excellent and everyone raves how fun it is to ride. Having fun riding to work is a plus but so is high mpg. Do I go with my heart or head??? Any advice would be appreciated.
Head.
heart, no point if your not enjoying it.
Spleen.
No, the spleen is the part of my body that will be hanging out of me once I fall of the MT if I went for that one…but at least I’d be having fun
heart
Heart, the extra cost of fuel, which lets be honest isn’t going to be massive on a 20 mile round trip will soon be forgotten every time you take the fun option out for a ride.
If your commute was like 100mile round trip then yes the head option would probably win over.
You have to enjoy wht you ride otherwise you will hate your purchase and regret not buying the fun option.
When I was commuting into Beckton, a 20 miler each way, there was very little enjoyment about it. There was some satisfaction in being able to filter through the regular 8 to 9 mile tailbacks London bound on the M11/A406, but there was no escaping from the fact in was an endurance. Ever day was the same, disgruntled cagers trying to close the gap, two wheeled twats that wanted to filter at the posted speed limit, you need eyes in the back of your head.
For my two penneth if its main purpose in life is to commute you can ease some of the commuting frustrations by getting yourself something designed specifically for that purpose. An upright riding position to allow the best view past the queues of traffic and to see as far ahead as possible. Proper decent rear view mirrors to see the twats sneeking up behind. A light and agile machine to perform all those slow speed and wriggling manoeuvres.
I personally think that if you are a little on the Maturer side of your Life (No offence Art ) then yes you probably will benefit more from commuting on a Comfy Commuter style bike, but if like me you are a young spritely whipper snapper then commutting on a sports bike is no issue at all i do a 20 odd mile each way trip every day on a GSXR750 and i love it, some days i have a nice sensible slow meander too/from work and other days i Hoon it into and home from work and i love it!! i have no issues with aches and pains or any agility issues in filtering, I would go with your Heart cos as soon as you get the bike, even if it’s sole purpose is commutting you WILL want to go on rides out at weekends etc, so why play on a commuter?.. commute on a Toy!!!
One word of advice, if commutting on a sports bike, keep up with your Maintenance, i clean and re wax my chain every fortnight. make sure you look after her and she will look after you, Also go for a tyre that is Touring Based like a Bridgestone BT30 or something, I have Pilot Power 2ct’s and they are fantastic when it comes to going out to play but for commutting the front does flatten out quicker than a touring tyre would and the front becomes very unstable when going over white lines and stuff as the profile isn’t true where it is mainly doing straight line runs. A touring focussed Tyre has a harder compound in the Middle so it lasts a bit longer than a sporty fast road tyre, yet the Bridgestones still offer fantastic grip when you want to go and Play at the weekend.
Just read the MCN reviews on these two and there’s very little between them.
Tank capacity and claimed mpg figures are virtually the same. The MT-07 has more top end and grunt so what’s the downside :ermm:
Ones a Yamahaha and the others a Honda and the’re both twins :w00t:
i do a hundred mile commute each day my petrol bill is about £63 each week my bike is returning roughly 10miles per litre the NC700 would save me roughly £20 a week but I wouldn’t buy one they are no fun & soulless
MT07 is the answer have some fun
Depends, how much would you have on petrol? How significant is that saving to you?
What the commute like? the hondas are pretty good in london traffic, low down power.
Saying that, you still want a bike to have fun on at the weekends and feel good about.
If the moneys not a big deal, try them both and then decide, infact try them both first!
I’d go heart, it’s not like you’re going for Panigale or something - the MT-07 is reasonably sensible but a bit more fun than the NC700, get a top box & ABS to placate your head if it keeps niggling.
Has to be head on a 20 mile commute.
I think most of the posts have pretty much covered it - weigh up what is more important to you; is it mpg or the fun element of the other bike? Sometimes it makes more sense to go for the logical option, but in this case, you may end up resenting the bike and wishing you had gone for the fun one.
As much as I like my CBR125 ( ) I regret not just getting a really cheap one so I could just trash it, rather than worrying about the resale…
Head.
Thanks for all the advice guys. This is the first time I’ve used LondonBikers and amazed at how quickly everyone responded. I’ve read through all the replies and although there’s a mixture of views, I’m now swaying towards the MT. Although my compute is not too long, it is not all filtering through traffic and there are a couple of duel carriage ways I need to go on (albeit for only 2 exits). I’ve test ridden the NC this week and I did like the seating position and the ride wasn’t bad either. I know it will do the job for what I need it for but like others have mentioned in the post, I possibly could regret my purchase (especially if I see another MT on the road.
I’m going to Yamaha today to see if I can test ride the MT then I’ll make a decision. Once again thanks for all the replies.
I’d opt for the MT given the choice.
or you could just buy 2 bikes
I will just add one thing, no matter what bike you get you will eventually get bored and want a new bike, its human nature, the same applies to women
