Bump Starting

My battery is playing up n til i get a new 1 on tues i cant be bothered to call out the rac to jump it everytime i wanna use it so wondered how to bump it, i sorta got told but cant remember, ne helpers plz

Ignition on, roll down hill or get a push, 1st gear or second if you prefer then stand up on the pegs and as your bum hits the seat hard let go of the clutch - thats how Grim does it anyway and it has worked everytime.

However I am not responsible for c0ck ups if you fall on yer arse

aint it gonna stall though after it starts??

Only if you stall it :stuck_out_tongue:

It will take off because you will be giving it a small amount of throttle, you pull the clutch in instantly if you want to stop or carry on as normal

right!! off to practise

Don’t forget we do paintwork for damaged panels ;)

Good luck

ahhh 1st time success, ma dad’s out of breath now n told me off for doing a wheelie down the road afterwards :w00t:

See - who needs Chunky

try it with a big twin, mine leaves black stripe even in top if you get the timing wrong

I can imagine :stuck_out_tongue: Had to bump my Busa on a gravel drive in the Isle of Man this year after stupidly leaving the lights on  Luckily got it right 1st time as a push back up the hill would have killed me

I had to jump the firestorm once … would want to do it again :pinch:

its not too bad as long as you let the clutch out and pull it back in immediatly it will usually have the engine pottering away! I have got up to 45mph down a hill once and let the clutch out all the way in top and slid to a halt in about 10 yards :w00t: its all in the wrist action

i tried bumpstarting my zzr1100 at 430 in the morning once and it backfired so loud that it woke all the nabours up

MY R1 wont start without the battery connected, so if its flat you cant bump it…its the immobiliser, it assumes the bike is being stolen…or so I was told after trying three or four times…

Yeah, not like the ol’ days where you just run off the genny with pulsating lights at tickover

So why the stand up/sit down bit?

Extra force on the back tire means there’s enough traction that the engine’ll turn over.

Otherwise you might end up dropping the clutch and having the back wheel just lock up

like my bike:P dont really need a battery…

not to mention having some nice grippy tarmac- bump starting in a carpark with polished concrete just makes pleasing but ineffective squealing noises

if you’re on your billy and cant get up to enough speed paddling you can run the bike along and jump on it side-saddle like - never been brave enough to try that one tho! thats good to know 2strokes - had that prob once before and wondered what the prob was…

Not only that, but beyond a certain level of battery discharge, the R1 (at least mine) doesn’t want to start.

Got caught out in Italy, but luckily was able to run some jump wires from my mates bike and get the R1 going.
