Buell 1125R maintenance and reliability.

I’ve been looking at the Buell 1125R just wondering how reliable they are and what sort of maintenance is required.

I’ll be doing 12000-15000 miles a year in all sorts of weather.

Its a harley - you only ever see them when there isn’t a cloud in the Sky… Think that should justify NOT buying one!!:Whistling:

I had an XB9SX for a year, it was a good solid bike in the time I had it, the only concern I had was how hot the engine got during the summer when riding through the city, some days it got so hot it was actaully painfull to sit on the seat!, However that engine was air cooled and the 1125 is liquid cooled so chances are there won’t even be that issue.

Garrett will be along soon !

Thanks for the advice RudiRulez.

Will be looking forward to hearing Garrett’s views soon.

Just done an insurance quote £400 full comp with European and Pillion cover. Sounds like a plan.

if you want a rust bucket go for it

I thought they wasnt harleys ? I thought they was rotax engines in them . I love a rotax me

the 1125 has a rotax v twin, a good engine, the RSV has it too i believe

I test rode a 1125R or CR I think it was, it felt fast and handled OK, the fuelling was not great but it felt like an unfinished product. They should be cheap to buy I guess

I don’t see how a bike made of mostly plastic will rust. Nor have I heard of Buells rusting. Do you think it will rust within 2-3 years?

Looks like you should stick to the Z1000SX - am test riding one tomorrow - fancy a trip to Watford?

Theyre mostly aluminium, less chance of rusting than most of bikes out there.

I know people have concerns about the belts(no idea wither the 1125 has a belt or chain tbh), personally I think belts are the future, theyre plently strong enough and require no maintenance, got a feeling that the newer buells even came with a lifetime warranty on them.

iirc a common problem was with the mahousive front disc warping, I didnt have any issue with mine but I never really put it through its paces.

I think because Buell was a sister company to Harley most people slate them off without giving them a chance, if people actually gave them a chance they’d have thrived, they’re good bikes overall.

The 1125 is belt driven.

The problem I can see with Buell at the moment is getting parts. The brake disc is a feature I love on the Buell.

@Ally - depends what time and weather.

Have been checking weather reports all day! Planning to do Watford at 11:30 am (5,000 mile ABS, top box) - can see what they feel like when they are run in, then slipping down to Ruislip Manor late lunchtime to try an ex-demo 350 miles. Could flex a bit if you were serious about tagging along.

Yes thats an issue, harley did promise 10 years of parts availibility, however on the XB forum there were always stories of stock shortages and long waits for parts.

Another good thing about the XB’s was that you didnt need a power commander, the fuel and timing maps (along with a load of other settings) were completely programmable by plugging a laptop into the bike and using a programme called ECMSpy.

I would take anything the Motocrappynews says about a bike with a gallon of intravenously delivered sodium . I sometimes wonder if they have even seen the bike never mind rode it :hehe:

Motor is the big Rotax V-Twin bored out - has served Aprilia well after all…

Decisions, decisions, decisions.

Think I’m defo going to test ride one in March when my restriction lifts and do some research in the meantime.

So how come it’s a 72 degree V when the Aprilia is a 60 degree one then?

I’d say it’d be a fun bike as a weekend toy, but if you’re gonna rely on it for day to day use then you’ll be sitting around at home a lot watching daytime TV whilst waiting for spare parts to finally turn up, assuming of course you can find them in the first place…

I’ve been doing some research and parts isn’t so much the issue its now the price of some of the parts because so few places stock them.

Reliability isn’t bad as long as its serviced like all other bikes.

i had a buell cityx

the only thing that springs to mind is they catch the rust easy built in the usa there not weather hardy for europe
