BMW F650GS single

Hey, has anyone any experience of this bike as have been looking at buying one for commuting 80 miles round trip to London.

Only thing that scares me about getting one is cost of replacement drive belts and pulleys which I’ve heard cost over a grand to replace by dealer.

How long do does things last?

Any help appreciated.

Cheers.

F650GS single is a chain drive.

Mate - wean yourself off this ‘funduro’ delusion and just get a Bandit/Fazer in the same price/condition bracket - would hate to do an 80 mile round trip commute on a single when there are equivalent IL4s available.

Or if you are feeling particularly perverse look at the Deauville - yes it has been used by scientists to cure insomnia but on the plus side you won’t have to be adjusting/cleaning/lubing some cack covered chain every weekend - plus you get built in panniers to stash stuff.

get a shafty for that sort of mileage. No point messing about with a single, just too vibey and C&S expense will not make it worth the while.

The later F650GS are actually rather smooth and easy to ride, and with the twin spark models are probably 50% more fuel efficient that the equivalent Bandit/Faze/CBF600.

Fair point - I haven’t ridden the F650 so I’m only assuming what it would be like based on the specs - but if you have ridden one and think it can hold it’s own against the IL4’s I’ll take your word for it.

Theres a couple of F650’s. I dunno about the single, but its probably a rotax engine and its chain drive. Theres the F650 which is actually a detuned 800cc parallel twin. Do you mean that one? That one is a chain drive. Theres an F800ST/GT, thats a belt drive. If you mean that, I used to have an F800

I’m selling mine

Twin, chain, big touring screen which is great in bad weather, motorways etc. c. 70mpg.

Cheers guys.

It was actually a CS (hence the belt drive) and I bought it…

Sorry Ninja :frowning: Although my 177 RWHP race tuned GSXR is back on the road in a couple of weeks if that helps mate :hehe:

The BMW is a bit bouncy compared to what I’m used to, but holds a line well and is quite fun down the lanes on its Michelin tyres. Comes with heated grips which I only discovered when I switched them on accidentally and found my hands warming up.

My mate (who is nearly 20 years older than me) just called me a Boring Middle-aged W****r. He rides and R1 and is disgusted at my purchase

Couldn’t give a truck…Used to commute 60 miles a day on a Suzuki 125 for a year and even had fun on that scrapping the pegs round roundabouts…

The Beemer fells like a bigger version of the Suzuki GS125 actually.

That explains the question. The Scarver. Yep that is belt drive, but I can’t see it costing £1000 for a new belt. It’ll be something that you could probably do yourself, or at the OMC. From what I can remember the belts need changing every 24K, but they can last longer.

Instead of the fuel tank that have a very peculiar luggage system, you might be able to find some of the options on eBay.

Thanks mate.

I just couldn’t find anything on eBay in relation to drive parts, but I was looking under GS so I wouldn’t find anything related to belts :doze:

The previous owner said he thought he paid £300 plus labour, but that was BMW dealer prices.

Not sure if there any pattern alternatives (probably not)…My local mechanic is good and doesn’t charge the Earth so it should be ok.

Thank god for that. I thought you’d gone insane.

Mary is interested in your F650. I am correct in saying its got lowered dogbones and has the lower seat, yes? Drop me (or MaryCrashBobbins) a PM with some more details (age, miles, what needs sorting etc) and what figure you had in mind (your inbox is full). Ta!
