Saw a chap on a BMW C1 riding through the city wearing a cycle helmet - is this legal? Even though you have the bizarre roof element on this bike does that honestly negate the legal requirement to wear a helmet. I though it was only Quadbikes where you don’t have to have a helmet on?
Im curious, (I could be missing something) but at where is the line drawn when it comes to cylce helmets/motorcycle helmets… Obviously an engine is involved, but if someone cycling has an average speed of 20mph in a 20 zone why couldnt a motorcyclist where a cycle helmet at that speed too?
Thats a really bad way of explaining/asking but Im sure you can put the pieces together. :Wow:
You don’t just have to wear a motorcycle helmet but a motorcycle helmet that is approved for UK use.
There is a stamp that helmets have- I forget what it is called.
If you have a helmet bought in a far flung place with lower safety requirements and use it on UK roads and it isn’t approved then it is just as illegal as a cycle helmet, or no helmet at all.
Yep, helmet got to be approved for UK use… rules out the Simpson Bandit then, unless you buy one of the European approved jobbies that looked nowhere near as good
Well, an an Aussie (where there is a mandatory helmet requirement) I find it slightly odd that the UK doesn’t have a mandatory helmet law.
I put it down to how the UK is policed - i.e. lightly.
The police don’t have guns, they don’t stop speeding people because they are never on the roads.
They don’t really have the man-power to do it.
In Australia you find police on the roads all the time, stopping cyclists, stopping motorcyclists, breath testing you every 5 mins, hiding behind every bush and rock with a handheld radar gun.
I personally prefer the UK system- it is a lot less stressful, but if looking for a reason as to why no helmet law I imagine it would be unenforceable with the current level of police on British streets.
That said, I reckon the law will change within 10 years.
The use/popularity of cycle helmets is about 25 years behind the use/popularity of motorcycle helmets. Probably something to do with the types injuries cyclists sustain after an off too, lower speed collisions being less likely to cause head injuries.
Australia is ridiclous…in my year there I got breath tested four times (passed every time)…stopped twice for filtering…twice for random **** (no ticket or charge)
four tickets for cycling without a helmet (one was in a national park) and one for not having a bell…seriously not having a bell
Filtering is illegal there, also you cannot just get you license in a week like you can here.
You have to do L plates, then 2 years of P plates, then you get your license.
