I’m after advice on which to choose as a tracking device for my new bike.
Subscription costs seem identical (99 pounds per year, discount for multiple years).
The unit cost is 299 pounds for the Biketrac and 179 for the TrakKING.
Feature-wise, the only difference I noticed is that Biketrac has the ability to record speed (which can be turned off) while TrakKING does not.
Any reason to go with the more-expensive Biketrac?
When I bought my bike the dealer said they d stopped using biketrac because it was heavy on the ‘small’ Ducati batteries and they d switched to TrakKing. I paid 300 fitted . Also I should say it’s my second TrakKing unit having had one previously without issues.
To be clear, prices for both units exclude fitting costs.
There’s a 33% discount for TrakKING subscription costs (quote THEBIKEINSURER33), so I think I’ll go for that.
I’m hardly an expert on these things (I happen to have a biketrac installed but that’s it), but one apparent difference from reading the trakking site is that it doesn’t seem to have the RF transmitter like the biketrac does; it only talks about GSM & GPS.
Note that they effectively say the best case is 10m accuracy, but not less than 500m accuracy.
Assuming that they really don’t have a RF beacon (rather than they just chose not to mention it for some reason) and the worst case for accuracy, then it seems like you (or the police) would have to search through a 500m radius circle (~785000 square metres) of council/industrial estate garages etc. to find the bike… Whereas with the biketrac the police would just use the RF receiver to lead them straight to it.
That’s how it works in my head anyway, reality may differer, the value of your house may go down as well as up, YMMV, etc. etc.
I had the Trakking fitted, Dicati dealer seemed to think this was the better of the two. Not had any issues, but I can say on Accuracy its spot on, on the dashboard map I can see which corner of the garage the bikes locked up in.
For those interested, I’ve had the Trakking unit fitted and can report that the feature set is very basic.
What you can do (via the web interface)
See your bike’s location.
Turn on/off SMS alerts for the bike being moved around with the ignition off (the bike is monitored regardless of the state of SMS alerting).
Notify the monitoring centre of the bike being transported or worked on.
What you can’t do:
See any history of where you’ve been with the bike.
Set up geofencing.
So this is a very basic tracker which seems like it’s only useful for insurance/recovery purposes. Don’t expect anything more.
Note that the price (179 excl fitting) include a 1-year subscription.
