biker signals....

Hey all. Since getting into biking and meeting loads of bikers during my training etc, I’ve come to realise what great folks we all are.

ive realised that there are many signals we give eachother but what are they?

i always nod at fellow bikers & i’ll always stop if i see someone & i think they need help.

i had some stick their leg out.???

& circle their head

what are yours???

From what I have heard, the leg out thing is a Frog nod.

circle their head? - Dude they were probably just stretching

Riding through France and Belgium the other weekend, most would stick their leg out if overtaking but if coming the other way they’d hold a fist out straight or nod. They’re quite good like that on the continent.

i just nod

i stick my middle finger up at 4 wheeled vehicle drivers…

i stick my middle finger up at 4 wheeled vehicle drivers…

ok ok!! maybe londoners are different.

i read that Thumbs down is for cameras
palms down for a police speed check
open close hands for flashers .

I’ve heard of the opening and closing of the hand and the police one, and believe they are what you say they are.

But god only knows about the leg out one??

Leg out is continental “nod”. Safer as you keep hands on bars. Either that or he was trying to kick a car!

Leg out is a track thing too, for the same reason - hands on.

I’m a leg out kinda gal, I always say hi that way when passing other bikers.

I grew up in France, leg out is basically a ‘thank you’ gesture not hello, you’ll notice bikers in Fance will give the leg when a car/bike moves over to let them pass, as opposed to cars in the uk who are on a mission to kill bikers!

Much safer gesture as two hands remain on handlebars.

Wasn’t aware of the other hand signs, thanks for that!

Yeah I do the leg out thing when a car/bike on my right has moved over, or done something good, keeps my hand on the throttle!

Nod to all passing bikers (including customs Choccie!) and a wave to left hand cars/bikes.

Legs out …all three

Leg out: when someone lets up pass or sometimes used to show people behind there is something on the ground (i.e. road kill - lunch for some ) which would not be good to run over.

Opening and closing the hand like K the frog: speed camera notice for people behind. For most bikers this is time to speed up to the speed limit which all the cars are going at

Pointing finger down behind your leg: (this is from riding in NZ with friends) shows you have seen an undercover pig (I use this word as they are trying to hide and I can’t stand people not being up front while at work ) and for your mates to stay behind.

Hand held with the finger and thumb making a circle, arm bent and moving up and down: used towards a car or bike when the twit does not move out the way for you.

I got a flash of the headlights from a car over the weekend. So I speed up to the speed limit to see if there was a cop around and after almost 2 miles no cops. Not that shocked as most of the time unless its another bike its a lie (IMO). But I still speed up to the speed limit to keep safe

I had to get used to the London way too.I can’t believe they gave me an international license when so many road signs etc. are very different from SA. We do ride on the same side of the road but I have found loads of differences here.

In London if you flash your lights at someone it seems to mean that you are signalling to another driver or pedestrian that they can go ahead.

In SA if you flash at another driver you are indicating to them that they better watch out because you are coming / or if you flash repeatedly you are mad at them for doing something dumb. It was really confusing at first.

I could not understand why people were flashing lights at me when I had not done anything wrong!

If you open and close your hand quickly at someone it means that you are advising them that they have left their blinker (indicator) on by mistake.

We also call traffic lights “robots” and roundabouts are called “circles” and we don’t have nearly as many circles as you guys do. ( If I did not have a Tomtom I would never get out of London, I’d just keep circling forever!)

Our traffic lights also don’t go Amber before they turn Green. They just go straight from Red directly to Green.

Our speed traps are well hidden so that you never know where they are placed, and they can be moved around constantly. I prefer your yellow boxes, at least you have a chance to slow down!

I nod…can’t say I’ve ever noticed the leg thing from other bikers but I’ll keep an eye out. What I hate is when I nod at another biker and they don’t nod back…I think its rude and feel like slaping them upside their head!!
