hi all…
has anyone done the bikesafe course … I want to further my rider training and it seems this is a good place to start … ive had a long break from riding but have got back to bikes over the last year and in time would like to do the advanced rider course … ive found there is a bikesafe local to me on sunday with spaces so I was thinking of booking on it … whats your views … cheerz…AL…
Most of us have, I think.
Some folks do it every year or so.
Worth doing, especially if you get a free voucher from the the London or Brum shows.
You can mention it to your insurance company when you up for renewal and you might get a bit of a discount.
mines on the 5th of July I do it every year
Hey amphibianalf - The Bikesafe is a good starting point. It may too change your perspective towards the police riders. They’re good chaps and love riding.
Try ELAM www.elam.org.uk for your IAM advanced course. They have courses run on Saturdays or Sundays, with the theory sessions held on Tuesdays. I’ve been a member of two other IAM groups, and have certainly found this one to be the most social.
I’m looking to book another one after being off bikes for a while…
thanks all …having just got back into riding I’m a bit new to further training options …and as I’m going to be spending more time on the bike I think its the right step …
funny how our perspective changes with age … I did my test in the 80’s and there wasn’t anything further to go on to … ive had chats with police riders a few times and had a good view and a respect for them anyway … It might have had something to do with the attitude and understanding they had for riders who don’t take the p##s and because they are riders they don’t see us as all the same …I’m off to book it now … the info on the site is pretty vague it just says turn up with your licence and insurance and a road worthy bike … anything else I should know … cheerz all …AL…
A good attitude helps so enjoy it
thanks all… I’m booked for this Sunday morning …there’s 2 places left if anyone’s interested (south London) … and I am really looking forward to it … AL…
enjoy it, it’s good fun. just relax and ride your own ride, try not to be perturbed by the marked bike following you, and ask loads of questions, the guys and gals there really are trying to help.
ya know what that’s gonna feel funny having a police bike following me everywhere … hope I don’t forget myself and keep pulling over … I am getting old ya know
Oh also, don’t worry too much about not giving it the beans… Most cases they expect you too and will say so. Just add long as you keep it sensible and not in town. Try to also think what you want to get out of it, for example safe town riding or speedy on the lanes
I think its more so to get my bike head back on where ive been driving for too many years and not having a bike
Just remember, 30 is 30 40 is 40 national is make progress when safe to do so. No double whites or overtaking approaching a junction etc have a blast.
actually the way I ride 30 is 25ish 40 is ooohhhh slow down a bit and if its a dual carriage way I’m in the car …LOL … I ride like I got an ol girl on the back called daisy …
hi all …
just got back … your right, that was fun… I haven’t ridden like that in years it was well worth it and an eye opener it was good to also see this side of the police riders … great fun
Glad you enjoyed it Alf. What’s next? You going for the IAM or ROSPA?
I’m gonna give it a bit of time and read both the books … they gave me the iam book in the road safe goodie bag it is my plan to do one of them …
there was a great moment though that will stick with my for a while and make me smile …
I was tail end and got behind coz of oncoming traffic down some lanes … when it was clear I went for it and had open road in front of me and my lead riders were out of sight but I knew they would wait/slow for me to catch up … then a guy on a fireblade passed me on a straight I was doing the limit… I followed him …
as we went around a nice sweeping left hander he was giving it some and there were my lead riders riding at 30mph waiting me … you have never seen someone’s riding style change so quickly … once the police rider saw me in his mirror he signalled the lead to go for it … the guy on the blade didn’t have a clue what he had ridden into that a sivi bike was chasing a police bike … was a great day
