Beware In France!

Just returned from a spur of the moment 1500 mile loop around France - and while I would recommend to anyone who has not done it before to GO NOW, I would also warn against speed cameras. They are everywhere. And I mean EVERYWHERE.
From police with radar guns to static roadside radar boxes and now mobile radar boxes (new for this summer: small boxes no larger than about 30cm square attached by wire to police cars parked up side roads. Impossible to spot until you have passed them).
I got caught in La Rochele on my return journey by radar gun. They gave me a piece of paper explaining my bike would be confiscated if I could not pay on the spot. They drove me to the nearest cash machine so that I cald withdraw the required ninety euros. Then they got really friendly, took photos of my bike on their mobile phones, shook my hand, said good luck for the rugby and sent me on my merry way. God I love France!
Honestly, keep your wits about you - for examle dont speed on roads with a hedge down the middle as the oncoming traffic wont be able to warn you against hidden radar - or better still, dont speed - and you will have a fantastic time. I swear the minister in charge of French roads rides a Fireblade!

Amen to that. Yeah they are pretty tight on speeding, more so than here I’d say. The fine system is fair too since it avoids endorsements but of course that’s just at the moment. And not much of a dis-incentive for the well heeled to slow down.

Roads are tops, really tops. It’s almost enough to make you want to live there…

must be the rest of france coz i just got back from marseille & it seemed that every bike on the road ( or pavement ) was speeding.

I’ve done 5k around france this summer and didn’t see a single copper, so depends where you’re riding me thinks

All the fixed cameras are well-publicised, and very rarely appear on ‘D’ roads and I’ve never seen one on an u/c. But then there are the new camera units… It varies by Department how ‘hot’ they are. e.g. Pas de Calais, don’t even think of speeding, Baie de Somme, not such a worry, more relaxed - but the French do seem to dislike their local Police more than we appear to do, so respect shown at the roadside goes a lot further. However a Brit is an easy target…

Best advice is stay within the limit and enjoy the scenery. If the road invites you to speed, choose a twistier road.

You were probably running tho matt eh? LoL

Avast!!!

Only brush with the Gendarmie I’ve had was last year coming down from the Gorge De Verdon towards Nice at 140 odd clocked them in the distance and slowed up to 50 odd when we went through they just signalled with the up and down arm thing “slow down”, they didn’t stop us, which was handy

Won’t be long before licence/ point thing is pan european… Fair enough really - I for one get pi$$ed off that foriegn plated motors are probably getting away with all sorts; the French probably feel the same
