Best route planning app on Android

What app is best for doing a google map style route that gives you turn by turn notification on Android? does the google maps app do this?

I have a few routes I really like the look of that I would like to put on an app and have the route guidance on my Bluetooth headset in my helmet.

Ride magazine have a really good one in this months magazine that I would like to do turn for turn but without an app with the route loaded on I don’t know how I would follow it to the letter.

Not totally sure on best app, but one tip I will give you with regards to last few versions of Google Maps on android no longer having option to download a chunk of map for offline use (i.e. not cane off all your data whilst out and about), is to type “OK Maps” in the search box. This will then bring you back to a screen where you can select a box around the area of map you’re looking at and let you download it (so long as it’s not too huge).

BTW, yep route in this months Ride does look good. Done bit to Finchingfield a few times and bit to Burnam, but not done bit around Sudbury and Blackwater. Definitely be up giving it a crack one day.

That route looks good, I added in my home as the start point and end point and it says 239 mi, 7 hours 24 mins - Hmmm I wonder how much time i will save by bike… Time to add that route to my iphone and get a sunday free for a early morning start.

count me in, I will definitely be up for that.

Get a ride going in the Ride out section

I pay for copilot. Works with Bluetooth fine, can plot three different routes to Istanbul without using data, and knows about speed cameras.

I use CoPilot as well - probably the best satnav app for iphone/smartphone and all maps are downloaded.

Nope - I hate leading rides as I never know if i’m going to fast or not fast enough, its missleading when you get to a corner and look to point at it for someone to mark but theres no-one there as they got held up by their lack of speed/car/caravan/double whites/etc" or when not using cornerman and you lose sight of the person behind you - or on the flip side you always have someone right behind you all the time as if to say come on i know this road you can go faster so your effectively holding them/few/whole group up!

i’m exactly the same, I hate leading too. I hated doing it for Arthurs Prom, I like to go a bit fast so sometimes I end up pulling too far away!!

Surely being law abiding citizens that you are, you all ride at the speed limit therefore never leaving people behind😃

Yeah but my R1 accellerates to the speed limit quicker then a lot of bikes and not as quick as a couple

My bike accelerates faster than I do,

Sam, is it now on my prom rideout you was scared of leaving us behind? PJ was just cruising and still overtook you

I used my google maps works perfect for me as it told me every turn and blah blah blah!

Google Maps has improved a lot recently as a SatNav, but mainly for use in the car. As you approach junctions where you have an option, it tells you if the other option is quicker or slower and by how much. Also, the traffic speed information has become really quite comprehensive, I think using the speed of moving Android devices along the roads.

Also, plot your route while at home on WiFi and it cache’s the map needed so it wont matter if you lose connection on the way.

so are we saying Google maps will do what I want? I can plan a route (set roads etc) and away I go being guided the way I want to go and not the way the sat nav wants me to go

Give that a look

Anyone know if any Android sat nav app will accept pre planed routes itn gpx etc. files ??
I cannot find anything

ViewRanger (not free) but it’s not a satnav as it won’t give you left/right instructions. You can also use the google earth app (free) to follow GPX.

Hi
Thanks
Much as I found Have use Anquet maps OS mapping, but no turn by turn directions but loads GPX files

Several app give turn by turn routing but not able to use outside routes

Oh well I may have to but a sat nav
