They make fridges for the restaurant trade as well as domestic markets so are well made. I’ve had mine (all stainless steel front Liebherr Premium) for over 10 years now. It’s only had a thermostat replaced once.
(I remember researching at the time. It was the only one to have a 4* freezer, which is unusual for the under counter (table height) size fridges, though I guess you are looking at the larger ones, so maybe not applicable).
I have a Siemens fridge/freezer (which has been great) but wen it dies it will be replaced with Miele.
I have a Miele washing machine, dishwasher and vacuum cleaner and they are all typically German; well made, sensibly designed and just work beautifully.
I didn’t know you replaced fridges unless you got sick of the sight of them or damaged them.
We have an under worktop Hotpoint (bought entirely on price as we were skint at the time) that’s probably 25 years old and a Bosch (chosen as it was on interest free credit) larder fridge that’s 12 years old.
I’d worry more about dish washers and washing machines. Fridges just do their job for ever it seems, unless you are unlucky.
Don’t get a Zanussi. Mine broke down 2 weeks after the guarantee ran out. Had to cook all the contents of the freezer & invite neighbours round for a big dinner.
I needed to replace my integrated fridge and freezer (2 units). I bought them both from http://www.clearance-comet.co.uk/ the cost was ~ 50% as a I recall. Each still had all the original wrapping but not in the original box. (i.e. ice box and shelves still wrapped and taped by factory)
You need to hang around on the site for a bit till what you want comes up but the turnover of items is quite high. There is a guarantee but I never bother with the extended stuff. As with anything not perfectly brand new there is always a risk but customer service is likely to be just as bad if you were to order new from the shop.
Whatever brand you get make sure it has two motors so the fridge and freezer compartments work independently of each other.
Mrs Arts trick is to keep the compartments full so the fridge/freezer doesn’t have to work too hard. If she doesn’t have enough food items to fill it, and she seldom has, she tops it up with bottles of water, transferring the odd bottle of frozen water from the freezer to fridge helps too.
I’ve bought quite a lot of appliances over the last 2 years (long story …). I think even with the mid/top brands it’s a bit a hit and miss on quality. I used to have a hoover washer/dryer in the flat as it was all I could afford. Everybody said it was cheap and nasty, but worked perfect for 12 years. In the house, I bought a Bosch as I thought it would be good and it broke down after 4 years of use only. At the same time, I bought a Zanusi, and like the Jets’, it broke down after a couple of years. It actually had its termostat replaced during warrantee, but never managed to keep temperature even after that (10 degrees difference between min and max!). At the end, the defrost element made the main fuse blow every time it went on, so I replaced it with an LG, which seems ok so far.
The Bosch washer/dryer was replaced with an AEG, and it’s been fantastic so far. It has a brushless motor, and it is super super quite. First time it was on, we thought it wasn’t actually working.
Whichever you buy, I can really recommend Appliances Online (http://www.appliancesonline.co.uk/) Really good prices (and they price match anything), some cashback through Quidco, free timed deliveries and very friendly staff.
My Dad had a British Thermal Houston (BTH) fridge, bought new in 6 and still working perfectly 32 years later! … Ah you can’t buy em like that anymore…
Our Samsung is 9 years old and still going strong, Had an Electrolux that was still going after 12 years…
