its misfiring in the cylinder with the cold pipe, its cold because the fuel isn’t being ignited by the dodgy plug, & that unburnt fuel is being ignited in the exhaust by the heat from the other cylinders, hence the spitting noise & backfire…
If it’s not firing on that cylinder then it can only really be three things: low compression, poor/no spark, or no fuel. If it is running rich then it may be that it starts but fouls the plug really quickly so it stops sparking.
You really need to get yourself a spark plug socket so you can check get that plug out to do some tests.
If the plug is wet fouling then you know it’s at least getting fuel. Then you need to check if it’s actually sparking by laying the plug against the engine with the lead attached and pressing the starter. To check compression you need a compression tester, but I would’ve though it’s unlikely to be that but best to check to be sure.
If it’s running rich then it may be your carbs aren’t as clean as you think they are - just because they look clean doesn’t mean that all the little passages in them are clear - or you may simply need to adjust your mixture settings. Do you at least have a Haynes manual or similar so you have some idea what the base settings for your carbs should be?
OK I’ll jump right in and didn’t catch what year and size it was but the first think is have you double checked that the fuel pipe isn’t kinked as that’s a common thing when putting tank back on, next would be have you been using the prime and leaving it on prime as the pet cock could need a new kit, make sure the vacuum pipe to the pet cock is in good order and working, balancing the carbs after a clean as said would be a must, then as said again the coils and plugs. after these have been checked it’s a matter of going through the motions. I hope this gives you some pointers and I’ll keep an eye out to see how it goes.
I have checked ALL thepipes are not kinked and are flowing nicely, but they seem fine…
I have also tried to run the bike with the tap in every position, Just gotta wait till friday I guess so my pal can bring over his clocks and a bunch of tools
Looks like Il be using the bus this week… Be sure to wave if you go past a number 56 between Angel and st pauls!!!
Ok… so I have spent the last week going over my bike section by section… balancing the carbs/changing plugs/coils/gaskets/oil/filters/Ht leads along with cleaning everything else (Including the tank)! and She still wouldnt start… I noticed that 2 of the float valves had worn rather badly and wre causing 2 carbs to flood! so… £50 to replace all 4 float valves and problem sorted!!! she now starts and rides fine… but she doesnt like sitting Idle… the revs just drop and drop then come up again… I have checked the electrics/fuel lines/vaccum lines and replaced all the fuel… any one got any suggestions?
It sounds like your not having a lot of luck, is it running for any length of time before dropping rev’s, has it warmed up enough, if so it could be kinked fuel line or vacuum pipe.
Well before I had all these problems I could start the bike on the button (No throttle or choke) now I can start it but i HAVE to use the choke, otherwise it cuts out… there is no length of time that I have noticed! I did find some kinked pipes yesterday but straightened them out etc and there was no change.
LOL you b*stard! dan was you at the ace last night? Black helmet parked right outside/opposite the doors to the cafe?
I spoke to matt from OMC who said he thinks i need to adjust the carbs to the sound of the engine… (As in when the bikes running) Iv been taking them off and on to do it so that probably doesnt help! dont suppose anyone has a mixer screwdriver thing I can borrow/use? or ride to you and you help me out?
I would take it to OMC but Im working when there open and dont finish untill late so wouldnt be able to do it for atleast another week! and my back side cannot deal with riding a boris bike or a number 56 for another week!
If you get a small screw driver and then hammer the shaft of the driver up into the handle. For mixture screw aslong as they are not tough to turn you dont neet to worry about losing fins bit of the shaft . Some super glue as you hammer it in keeps it solid enough … So once you have it nice and short … Like this …
then trim off the handle you make yer own awkward places screw driver that you can still count the turns easily with .
So I have just got back from RIVERBANK MOTORCYCLES who put my bike on the dyno and gave it a run!
They said its running too lean. possibly due too an air leak… He had a butchers and couldnt find any
So he said it has too be the mix, he adjusted my 2 outer carbs and it seemed to start sounding better, but he couldnt reach the inner 2 so I have to wait till my engine is nice and cool before I attempt it…
He said its too lean so once I fix that im going to put the Viper system on it along with the K&N and take her back… Im hoping that is why its not so great!
