Average speed cameras on the A40

My impression is that for the first few weeks after the system went live most people were sticking to 40 but lately almost everyone seems to be doing more like 50

Yep I’d agree a lot of people seem to be doing around 50. I have been sticking religiously to 40 for the past few days and I am getting overtaken a lot. No bad ones yet but I definitely don’t feel “safer” than before the cameras were put in. I also haven’t seen any improvements in traffic flow

It’d be funny (not really) if they were deliberately waiting for everyone to get back to doing 50, so they can hit an even bigger jackpot when the cams go live for real.

Not funny and not surprising. Maybe I’m just cynical.

That's pretty realistic, huge jackpot if they'd fine every car on the A40 every day for 2 weeks until people get the "message"

Massive jackpot especially if you factor in the fact the “message” (the NICs) would take up to 2 weeks to arrive in people’s homes

Well I can confirm they are live as I got an NIP in the post this morning for an offence on the 29th. It said I was doing an average of 50 in the 40 stretch, which is entirely possible. I’d been away from London for a few months and no idea there were cameras there, I didn’t see them or the signs. Oh well, lesson learned.

Sorry to hear that. Guess that’s my fate sealed. Seems pretty underhanded to wait for people to speed up again before they started sending NIPs out (if that’s the case).

Hope you don’t mind me asking, did you get offered a speed awareness course?

Also, how many points did they give you?

I assumed they would be given 3. Could it be more?

You may still be offered an awareness course the the mrs did one just end of december she was caught doing 42 in a 30 not on the a40 obviously but same met police force .

They’ve not offered me anything yet - just asked me to confirm who was driving. So I guess I have to wait and see.

Good luck DCBR, there’s still a chance you’ll get away with it!

Oh okay I always assumed the initial NIC would tell you your punishment.

Thanks but I can’t see myself getting away with it now haha. Lesson learned I think. I was hoping to at least find out my fate quickly. I imagine a lot of people are getting notices through there letterboxes at the moment. Plenty of people seem to be doing 50+ on the raised section between Paddington and North Acton

Everyone seems to be doing ±50 and then you get the total nutters flying past them.

If the cameras are really live now, as nick has just discovered, there must be an awful lot of NIPs in the post. <looks nervously at door mat>

I didn’t see any cameras on the raised sections? I think it’s just on the flat areas?

The cameras are at the entrances and exits of/from the flyover. But since they're average speed cameras, that's all they really need.

Cameras tucked away nicely at the entrance from Paddington then cameras after you come off the raised section (so on the flat bit) . You should be able to see the t road marking on the ramp entrance.

Now I know they’re there can’t believe I missed the signs. The cameras are much harder to spot due to being slightly hidden or very high up.

Bastardos.

Bikes going the posted speed are sitting target, I feel really vulnerable doing 40 so now keep up with the rest or just go faster.

I totally agree. Particularly around the exits to Shepherd's Bush, both westbound and eastbound, when you have to move to lane 2 because lane 1 becomes the exit. Sitting in lane 2 at 40 mph is a very scary proposition; you get mad passes both left and right. Too scary. I just go with the flow now.

Westbound there is less danger of being caught because the queue for the Old Oak Road junction is usually backed up to the cameras, so you have to slow to filter. Any slowing will comfortably reduce your average.

Eastbound is a different story because the cameras are at the Edgware Road flyover and funnily enough there seems to be less of a queue there these days, so it’s possible to arrive at these cameras without having slowed at all on the elevated stretch.
