I did go on it once with my friend, but in a car and he was driving the car. It was a old banger and doing 60mph max. Cars past us at bullet speeds. Not advisable if you have a old shet car like my friends. very frightening exp. I wouldnt mind having a go with my cbr 600 with brand new tyres.
The fastest i went on the Autobahn was 152mph, but richm did i think 186 on his Blade this year.
Once you have a couple of runs on them they are not all that. You do get sick of sitting on 150+ for long sections of time (not that long as a Vtwin drinks like a fish :w00t: ).
The roads around Germany and France are great. Stay away from the ABs and you will have loads of fun IMO.

Once was driving my Rover 620 (great car!) about 100mph somewhere around Magdeburg and old Lady passed me with her Opel Corsa 1.4 (old bricky shaped model)
She really had a lot of fun with that

another one - guitar string attached to the neck, in case of accident you die even faster than your bike
as niceday said you get fed up with it after a while ive done it 5 years running now, first time on the cbr600 2 up got 155 flatout, this year 2 up got 178 sat nav reading as speedo was in orbit reading 195, two of the other guys got to 187 sat nav speed dont know whe speedo was reading as none of them looked at it.

Heh, I’m German Highest speed I’ve ever seen on the 'Bahn was about 170mph in my bosses Merc E55 AMG (and later Brabus S600 :O).
Driven myself 135-150mph in cages for long, long periods of time. It’s good fun. It’s really no big deal either. People here have great lane discipline. Anything over about 120 gets tiring on a bike though. You’ll have Rambo-style neck muscles after a while.
Other poster was right though, stay away from Autobahns and stick to smaller roads. I’m staying with my old man in South Germany right now and went out for a drive today. Beautiful, smooth, clean roads with swooping bends, lovely autumn scenery, sunny weather and balmy temperatures, I highly recommend it. Beats riding in London for sure… riding here is more relaxing than anything else. London is more urban warfare XD
was it last year as i came up behind a silver one at 150 flashed him to move out the way, there was a puff of smoke and he just pulled away from me,i looked at my speedo again and lost my bottle and he was out of site in seconds, will never forget it as ive never had a car do that to me before.
I was out with nice day and I saw 189 indicated on the R1, so I rekon it was about 90 lol. Great fun but the novelty wears off very fast.
Was doing some speed testing at Bruntingthorpe at a Vmax day in my mates BMW. All going well, (got it up to 150mph - and I dont have a car licence!! ) but then we were running low on fuel so we coasted down the runway at around 50/60 just as two ruff porsches came past at 196mph, that was really scary…

It’s not OBLIGATORY to go as fast as you can. Many autobahns have speed limits (and when there’s roadworks, those limits can be really low). There are only some sections where it’s a “recommended” 130kmph (i.e. the speed’s not limited, just recommended).
BB? Dont get your point on above comments? Think MOST people who own and ride bikes, know that is the case on the speed issue? So i didnt understand why you wrote this? Or have i missed something here? not being funny, just didnt get your post? 
Just a straightfwd comment, Blade. I didn’t mean it to be funny either. Original question was: “has anyone driven/ridden on the a-bahn?”, so I guessed they were after any comments about a-bahns in general.
(Almost) all the other replies were about what’s the fastest speed they’d done/seen on the a-bahn, so I just posted something to balance the thread out.
Must admit that I DIDN’T know how a-bahn speed limits worked until this summer when I went on one for the first time. Happy to accept that most other people DID know this, but since it wasn’t common knowledge to me, I thought it might be the same for the original poster.
For all I know, original poster could have been thinking “I’m a bit nervy about going on one because I think that they’re all unrestricted and all going to be full of people going as fast as they can”.
In my experience of travelling from the Sth West of Germany, up to the Monchengladback area this summer, there was more of the a-bahn that was restricted than not, and speed limits on a lot of the a-bahn were actually less than on French autoroutes, so I thought that might be relevant info. Hope that makes sense.
And yeah I’ll second BB’s comments by saying (after 3 autobahn trips) that by popular opinion the police are very tough on bad driving (so that’ll be the brits then) and speeding when a limit is in force. They will use helicopters to chase / observe - I’ve seen them twice coming pretty low over the road (enough to read the Police markings) so that’s for fact.
Otherwise, fasted I did was an indicated 140 on the 7 but that was with panniers and tail pack, the former started flapping like wings so I backed off.
Trouble is that the cars go so fast and catch you so quick even at 140 you must be very observant - we are too used to being the fastest things on the road in this country.

Autobahns are generally paragons of lane discipline and good driving with common sense prevailing. As other posters have mentioned a lot of the network do have advisories in place rather than unrestricted Death Race 2000. Try then you’ll enjoy it after suffering our Motorways.
That said I mostly do my max out runs on French Autoroutes (I believe that in general the road surface is better than some Autobahns but that might just be me), and then only to get somewhere far away more quickly than the infinitely more fun Routes National.
In the spirit of the thread the fastest I’ve seen on the speedo was an indicated 172mph. Probably over by a bit as don’t use satnav:D
Just over 50% of the 11500km of Autobahn have no speed limit. Roughly a third suffer from permanent ‘Tempolimit’ (speed restriction). The rest have temporary speed restriction due to road works etc. Driving on the Autobahn is pretty relaxed as long as everyone is sticking to the rules. A large percentage of crashes due to excessive speed, are actually caused by a slow vehicle pulling into the outer lane and into the path of a faster one. The recommended 130km/h are only a guide, as you are always required to drive reasonable in the circumstances. So driving 250km/h in icy conditions is ok, as long as you don’t have an accident; If you have: Wave goodbye to your licence and forget your insurance renewal. :w00t:
