Anyone any good with .htaccess files?

I just keep getting 500 server errors and can’t work out why.

Using a simple

AuthType Basic
AuthName “login”
AuthUserFile /passwords
require user test

file with a password file in the same folder.

Any ideas?

Thanks Lee, but after 4 days (not full time ) of bangin my head against a brick wall I’ve finally sorted it this morning.

Seems the problem lay in the server’s ability to read the file.
