I want to cover the tiled floors in our new place with wood. I don’t want to use laminate type.
The floors we have are of hand made tiles and are quite uneven and (having no experience of this) my thought is to lay strips of wood across the room and lay the planking on top. Does this sound right or should I have the floor skimmed with cement?. Would rather avoid cement if poss as I don’t really want to destroy the tiles…
Dependent on degree on unevenness
Fibre underlay boards can usually even out a couple of millimetres dependent board thickness / make etc. They can also have good acoustic properties
Alternatively you could sheet with WPB Plywood or similar although it would normal need to be fixed to the sub floor
Failing either of above you can use a self levelling compound (latex based) but this bonds directly to the tiles which you indicted was not your first choice
Also bear in mind that with A or C the floor you install will most likely have to be floating (although parquet / cork etc can be bonded to a screed)
Lift them up. It’ll be more hassle now, but in the long run you’ll be happier. Dont forget, by ‘adding’ to them, you’ll then have a step. If you lay wooden batons, they need to be deep enough to handle a porter nail (driven in @45 degrees). It’ll be pretty high. You can ‘float’ the floor on underlay/sticky foam etc, but its not as good a job.
Lift them.
A kango with a flat head can be hired, and a young labourer can be found for £40 or so. Do it! lol

I think the floor looks great as it is chap. Would be a real shame to cover it in cement.
The problem is that the tiles are a big selling point here (spain) when we sell the place and a wooden floor is unusual…the tiles are about 6 euros each and , being a Scot, I can’t bring myself to smash them up 
I would avoid steps by doing it right throught the house…

The you already have just needs some TLC to make it very good. Why stich shi77y laminate over it?
Why not spend the money on a professional clean, and polish, will make the TILES look like new. What does it matter that they are slightly uneven?
Yeah…thought about that but it isn’t the appearance of the tiles…I quite like the “rural” look but they are freezing cold (which will be good in the summer). I1m now thinking to throw a carpet down in winter and have tiles in summer.
Remember raising the level of the floor means removing each door and trimming then refitting. The other thing is as far as I know a wooden floor needs a skirting of sorts so when somebody removes the skirting it will leave a bit of a mess behind.I would buy a good heater and leave it if I were you:)

Just loved those marble tiles in August, but stuff that in January.
Seriously, with a bit of (professional?) TLC that should be a lovely floor and would cost £lots if you wanted to put a new one down. Just stick a bit of (IKEA) non slip underlay down and throw a decent rug over it for the winter.
