In the post race interview at Assen in 2002 Rossi said “I have never seen a 500 ridden like that.” He was talking about Barros on a NSR500 mixing it with the new 999 4 strokes.
At Valencia the same year Barros was given a RCV and beat Rossi head to head.
Last year was a classic case - won a single race but didn’t show anywhere near that form during the majority of the season.
You’ve got to say he’s got the talent to run at the front, but can he win it? I don’t think he will, but one things for sure, WSB 06 could well be back to it’s glory days on the mid / late 90’s.
I was reading his page in Portuguese and spoke to a friend that knows him personally. She told me that he only gets the best parts when it’s important for the sponsors not when it’s needed for the championship. He’s good there fighting for it but not good if wins the champ. It’s all about money and there’s much more behind a champion than only talent!
When he was with West Honds Pons they (Barros and Loris) had the 500’s from the year before. They did get updated parts, but usually long after the Repsol boys had them. I think both riders rode like gods for that team.
Barros got the RCV at the end of the season because Loris had already made his intention to sign for Ducati known. I think he made good use of them.
His move to the factory Yamaha team was blighted from the start. Nasty injury in pre-season and by the time he’d recovered it was too late.
More recently he’s been in the Repsol team himself (so had top billing) and the Camel bikes were supposed to be the same spec as the bikes Sete used.
I’ve no idea what spec the klaffi bikes will be. I think the Ten Kate team (JT’s team) develop a lot of their own parts. Lets hope he does get good kit, cos I’d like to see at the sharp end.
BTW - he’s not doing this 'cos he needs the money. When he jumped ship back to Honda, Yamaha sued him for a massive sum (which I believe was picked up by sponsors). The sum involved indicates he’s had some VERY big paydays!
I agree with you pete! Need the money? his family is one of the richest of his state! He actually paid himself for some of his season on the 500cc class.
Good to see him continue to race, especially in the very competitive WSB series. I think it’ll take him too long to learn the circuits, and is the bike going to be any good? Vermuelen was on the best WSB Honda and that didn’t cut the mustard. So, no, I don’t think he’ll contest the top five, but perhaps the top ten? I can’t wait to find out!
To answer my own question about TV coverage the WSB will be shown on Eurosport on the Monday after, according to http://www.worldsbk.com/. There is a full list of TV channels for those of you with fancy rigs:
