Advice sought - fix or sell?

hi guys

have been riding a cbr600fy (1999) for a couple of years (bought for £1300 and it’s served well as a commuter and for a bit of fun. It’s got around 40k miles on the clock and has recently developed some kind of fault (has blown 3 reg rec’s, and now will only run with full choke on). It also has another puncture in the rear, and both tires prob need replacing anyway, as well as the chain and sprockets.

I’m guessing the bill to get it back on the road will be around a grand. I’m not sure how much it is worth if i put it on the market as it is… and still to decide whether it makes sense to get it fixed or whether to try and sell it and get another second hand bike

any opinions welcome, thanks

If you sell as it is you will probably be lucky to get a couple hundred quid for it if you are genuine and tell the buyer of the problems, Or you could be a bit of a Pig and sell as is and not mention the problems. (But in my opinion, anyone that does that deserves serious Bad Karma on them!!) If you fix and sell you will probably get a better profit, stick some part worns on it (less than £100 for a pair) Chain and sprocket (£80-£100) and probably £200-£300 for Honda to locate the fault and remedy.

thanks - definitely wasn’t thinking of trying to sell without mentioning the problems - they are pretty evident anyway!

I guess with the option you suggested i’d be around £500 up, if i could sell it for around a grand once fixed - well worth doing - i’m slightly worried that the electrical / engine problem might be more expensive than £200-£300 to fix - I guess i could take it to be diagnosed, and then make a call once i know the price

cheers!

you could get it checked by an Independant garage (probably an Hours Labour) then if the price to correct the fault is within budget you can do it and get a much better return on your money.

yep - will push it down to my local garage - worth a £45 gamble for the diagnosis

Break it, or sell it to big D to break

Well there are a couple of options worth considering. When I had my old bike every time it went in for a service it was close to a grand just because things kept wearing out. So when I blew up the engine, it was probably worth about £200. Ricky (who you can find on the rideout thread from last Sunday 22nd) replaced the engine for about £600 (all inclusive) and then I rode it for a few more months and sold it for a grand.

I’d suggest you get Ricky or Scorch on here to fix it, or take it to the OMC where Mat will probably tell you how to fix it just by smelling it and then either keep it or sell it on. Mat will probably be able to tell you whether it is an un economic repair.

When the engine blew up on my bike Chiswick Honda described it as an un economic repair which it was at their labour rates.

Also have a think about getting something new on Finance, you can use the current bike as a deposit. It’s nice to have a few troubleish free years of biking.

Cheers Joby. I remember the old cb500 well!

Unfortunately with no access to a garage a new bike isn’t an option for me. Thanks for the recommendations

As long as you can park it off the road, out of site, on private property, there shouldn’t be any problem owning a new bike.

I’m happy to take a look for nothing if you can get it over to Saturday Surgery  I’m intrigued.

you can fix all that yourself for under a grand

I guess it’s not going to be great if you sell it, and try and buy a new bike for the proceeds +/- the £1k you spend to fix it up. £1,5k would probably get a bike with lots of issues.

I’m facing a regulator replacement bill - hope nothing else is gone, and my tyres are about 7 years old (Metzlers!@). I guess after the 5th year of a bike, it’ s not worth selling if it’s just a consumer bike , unless you break it for parts, or even better - buy an identical one so that you have all the spare parts you need

Your tyres are 7 years Old!!!

Jesus!! do you only do 100 miles a year??? i’ve gone through 2 rears already in 12 Months

Bring it round to Tim and find out what’s wrong with it.

he’s proper hardcore Sam

i think i get through 3 rears and one front and thats just when i dont ride much

back to topic, give it to Scorch i’m sure he’ll get the bike ready to sell with minimum effort.

FIX IT

Else you’re in a vicious circle of replacement machines

It’s the cost of motorcycling

that’s a great offer, thanks - if it wasn’t a bit of a trek with a non runner i’d take you up on it

would be sad to see it go but could be the excuse to get the r6 i’ve wanted for some time

thanks for all the input

Tim will come to you for a few quid.

well, when you put it that way…

Actually, 8,000miles in 7 years

I used to do 6,000miles a year when I lived in London. Now I don’t need to, so I only use a motorcycle for fun.

It certainly wasn’t any fun commuting
