Does anyone know how the ride is being marshalled this year as there will be no Bikesafe Team escort and the Unity Riders have not been asked to assist.
The problem is, if anything happens, It’s the polices fault. I believe there is a car leading the way with a van at the rear. We will leave the Ace as a convoy and should be clear until we get to the A406. Given the fact we’re following a car its not likely we will go near the speed limits.
I’ve not got the planned route yet, so will know more about the logistics this weekend (hopefully)!
keep up the good work gof, would be great if we can get the road closed like last year… was amazing just 100’s of bike mulling along was amazing and the public support as well was fantastic…
is it a finanical thing for the police I’d be happy to throw in a tenner(ish) and if every bike did that as well that should more or less cover the police bill going by last years turn out.
It is a shame that if this were a demo - like the No to Parking Fees demo on the 7th, the Met will escort to ensure rider safety. If it is a charity event, they won’t! Maybe you need to change the charity ride to a “No to unescortet charity rides” demo?
RE Police escort/ organisation etc of the Toy Run:
The Ace tells me that - " With regard to the Xmas Toy Run, I am advised by the cafe’s events team that as in previous years, police are participating in this years run, and that it is in essence in the same format as always. "
Garret, was that the Ace, or the organisers? The Ace don’t organise the event, they only provide the jumping off point. I know the Met have told the Unity Riders that they will not be escorting any toy runs this year (with specific mention of the Ace run) and that stopping traffic to allow processions to proceed unimpeded is illegal and they will no longer be doing it (protests and events with potential public order issues are a different matter). At the current time the Unity Riders have not been asked to assist with the Ace Toy Run which would certainly be the case if the police were involved in the same way as previous years as they were recruited and trained specifically to do this sort of thing. The last I heard the police involvement this year was a couple of of duty BTP but hopefully things have moved on from that.
Got a meeting Monday, should have something solid by then.
So far, no MET assistance. Unity riders are in.
And the couple BTP which is put in such a good light by my esteemed colleague above (same training, bla bla, same job, bla bla, same pay, bla bla, same bikes, bla bla) are still involved (maybe you’d prefer no police escort) and working hard to get a team together for full road closures.
My current dilemma is a commitment to football matches, a protest at a mosque, routine and emergency incident coverage, etc, etc which make getting a team together difficult. We’ve got the bikes, just not the riders available for that day.
But, my point… don’t worry about the marshalling or the roads… turn up, and give some sick kids a happy day. SUPPORT THE EFFORTS!
