I may be a bit biased (having owned one for 3 1/2 years!) but SVs are cracking bikes, and a really good choice if you want an all rounder which you can commute on, do a trip abroad, go scratching at weekends and try out trackdays. Also handy for London as you can buy/insure them pretty cheaply (several insurance groups lower than a supersports bike) and there are loads of parts available.
If you want to find out more/check out some examples come out to Frith St in Soho one Friday eve, which is where the the sv650.org weekly meet is. The LB Friday night crowd usually meet at the Ace and head into Frith St later, so you can either ride through with them or just come by on your own (if you PM me first i’ll keep an eye out for you)
You need something with a lot of low end torque, then you won’t notice the restriction. My cousin has a restricted SV650, and it’s fantastic, he doesn’t notice it’s been restricted til he tries to go fast.
Big tip - dont lose your nerve when doing the U-turn, otherwise you’ll end up in the middle of the road trapped underneath your bike! It hurts, physically, and you’re pride!
Freedom in Watford are good.
OK, I keep hearing this SV mentioned. I think I will go for one, they are more expensive to buy, but their insurance on an SV650 is cheaper then the insurance on my NSR125!!
I’ll be going for that, love tthe look too, and I can hav the low end power and stay legal. Oh yeah. B4 I dive in though, are there any other bike similar to this?
I took my A2 when I was 18, passed and bought myself a 2004 Yamaha R6… Had it restricted, and then two weeks later pulled the washers and the throttle restrictor out! I had the papers saying my bike was restricted so the police knew no different obviously unless I got pulled doing 160mph, but the bike did 120 restricted anyway…
I wouldn’t personally go for the SV650, depending on what kind of rider you are and what you will be doing on the bike. I commuted every day in all weathers on my R6 and loved it, who cares about spending more on petrol! EACH TO THEIR OWN THOUGH!
I’ve got a 2006 Yamaha R6 and didnt get that restricted, and no one cares!

You know what, the R6 came to my attention today. Costs as much as an SV to insure. You know it’d be cheaper for me to insure an R6 then my NSR125?
My NSR’l be £646 and the R6 only £571. I’v bin looking at gettin an R6 since. A beautiful bike. But I’v read that they are target No.1 for thieves. Get an almax chain I guess
Whats it ride lie restricted? Thing is, if i get it restricted, and then get busted cuz Iv taken the restictors out, Ill wanna shoot myself lol. But then agen, Im a hypocrit cuz my NSR’s de-resticted now lol. And I hav bugger all papers for that lol.
Drei is spot on, my 04 R6 got stolen! so dont think for a second that its guna be safe if you leave it somewhere like uni or shopping centres because your asking for it!
ANY BIKE TODAY needs to have a tracker, its a must, no matter what you have because theives will nick almost anything… my 06 R6 is an amazing bike to ride, great to fly into corners, amazing speed and an all round superb bike. My 04 R6 was a bit twitchy into corners but still a great bike to have; They changed the tyre sizes in 2005 to stop the twitchiness! Gixxers are great too but insurance for me was too high for one of those…
TRACKERS ARE ONLY £400, AND IF YOU SPEAK TO CHARLY(i think) HE WILL GET YOU A LB DISCOUNT!
Trust me, if you take the restrictor out you will get no hassle from police what so ever except for three reasons;
You’re going way too fast, ie over 100mph (only if you get caught that is )Or you’re rude to police and they knew a thing or too about bikesOr you get stopped by biker police or traffic copsPlus they will need to take your bike to dyno it so they wont know there and then and most of them cant be bothered trying to sort it out. I’ve been stopped loads of times for doing stupid things as some of you might know and I’ve only ever been asked once if it were restricted, I said of course I’ve got the papers at home of which I didnt because I didn’t get my 06 R6 restricted and they said fine! It really isnt a big deal in my opinion, HOWEVER!!! Its a risk only you yourself can take, and to be honest you will get fed up of having a throttle that turns 2mm round!
If you need a hand ripping them out PM me!

Bikers are so much cooler and more helpful then cagers. Once youget a tracker, do you need to pay like a subscription of anything. And I’l pay the extra for an almax, cuz ill kik myself if it gets robbed, Ill be thinking, “maybe if I had an almax…” lol. Also I always chain my nsr to fences and bars and lamp posts, so Ill do evn more so on a bike screaming “YOU WANT ME THIEVES, YOU KNOW YOU DO!!”
If i can’t afford an R6 tho(likely), Ill most likely be gettin an SV650 or VFR/RVF400. But I know for a fact its an R6 I want, and I intend that to last me for life. Because of this, yes… I will be riding like a granny. But at least its a granny on a working bike lol.
I drive a car too! lol
I think its about £105 a year after the first year, £400 for the tracker and the first years subscription! Chains and disc locks are helpful aswell and can deter less experienced theives too.
My R6 is up for sale at £5500 with some extras if you’re interested…
RVF400s are nice to ride and you can ride them hard, very light and corners great! If its an R6 you want then its good to try and go for one because when I bought my 06 R6 at 18 I loved it and I blow out most of my mates whom had been riding for quite some time… POWER IS EVERYTHING! Soon you will get bored after about 2 years and want more power!

I can vouch for how much fun a VFR400 is, but if you’re tall it probably wouldn’t be that comfy.
Problem at the mo is I cant afford an R6, unless theres one going STUPIDLY cheap lol. Hence me looking more at Svs and VFRs.
Also can the trackers be moved from one bike to another? Then I could get it, and switch it over as I change bikes. Or are they like one fit.
TBH if I saw an R6(£571) for £2000 I’d prob make the stretch for it, cuz my hearts set on one, if not I’ll get an SV(£517) for like £1k and failing THAT, its a VFR(£569) for round like 7/800.
Money really is an object when you’re a student lol. Surprisingly though, the insurance on all these bikes is really similar. (there in brackets)
ps I ent that tall, I’m 5’8"ish
Nope Trackers cannot be installed into another bike, the monitor is registered to a specific bike make and model, Frame number and everything. Although you can find it if you look for it they don’t tell you where they install it either… Im 5’9 and I’ve ridden a Gixxer, a R1, a TL1000S (bit of a stretch), a Aprilia RSV Mille and is mostly ok so I don’t think you will have a problem really. It will probably feel big to start but you’ll get used to it!
TBH finding a good SV for £1000 might be difficult, and also a R6 that hasn’t been ridden to the ground for £2000 might be hard too! They are guna be a lot different to ride then your NSR especially the SV as its a V-Twin and you may not be used to it, ride within your limits and get a feel for the bike before you start having stupid moments.
How can you get £571 for an R6 at 18, thats a good price! Mine was £1038 TPFT for my 04 R6…

Ent got a clue, a CBR600 is like £2grand, and every1 gives me the same for an R6 except express insurance. SoI’m chuffed. Basically, its realistically, a VFR400 for like 1000 or an SV for like 1200-1300 i think. I like the pointy SVs, not to keen on the ronder ones. But an R6 is my goal lol. I’ll get there.
Good Luck!

What Hen said!
Basically, seems I’ll be gettin a VFR400. Unless I can find a nice cheap Sv650, I really want an R6 but thinking about it I dont wanna get one and kill it. Get a VFR400, no1 wants to rob it, and I can ride it and not look so appealing to the police. Although on a bike, the helmet helps you hide ya age from cops lol. They dnt seem to like young riders. Also, I may get an R6 when I can afford the Fire and Theft so I have a bit of security on a bike I’v spent 2/3 grand on.
Are 4 strokes really that much easier to maintain??
PASSED my bike test(4 minors). Dropped my bike the day b4 my test so I had to so it on a CG(my mirror broke), glad I did, the U-Turn was SO EASY, but getting to 50mph on the dual carriage way was an EFFORT lol, not as fast as my NSR which would hit that in like 3/4 secs lol.
Time to sell up and get my new bike
I did my test at Elite in the end, got em to price match sum1 who was like £100 cheaper lol in READING, so I got it cheap AND close. WIN!!
1st thing i did, is visit my mate in Guildford USING THE MOTORWAY. So glad to use it, and not jump outa my skin every time i see flashing lights. Chuffed
What should I get? and would I get caught with no restriction on it? I’m open to ALL views.
Ill start a new thread for this though.
