A Visor Question

Hey Happy New Year All.

I have been thinking of getting an Iridium Blue Visor. After googling for one this morning came across a link that suggested they might be illegal.

Would anyone know if Iridium Visors are legal to use on the roads in the UK? And if not then how strict are the dibble, I guess it all depends on the policy of the local police constabulary in the end.

Oh and whilst im on this, any reccommendations on where to order one from? There were plenty of sites offering them for sale when I googled all of which I had never heard of before, if you know of a reputable company please let us know. Cheers.

I dont know the details of the law, but this would almost certainly be an illegal visor. It has to let a certain % of light through, as apparently we cant be trusted to change our visors when it gets dark… some of us dont, no names mentioned!

Re the plod, it depends on how pedantic they feel like being on that day, I ride with a dark visor and (touch wood) have not been stopped, however, if I use the dark visor, I always carry my clear to at least demonstrate some intelligence and understanding of the law and that I am likely to change it to a clear visor when the light diminishes.

Try ebay, can get replacements off there quite cheaply.

Hope this helps.

No, they are illegal.

It’s not the % light that counts in this case, as my cough iridium visor lets in the same light as my road legal dark visor. It’s stamped “not for road use”.

It’s the fact that people can’t see your face clearly that has led to them being branded illegal. Up for banning next - buffs, facemasks and biggles-type scarves. What ho!

What make helmet is it? Try www.racevisors.co.uk

Once you have found what you like, perhaps look for it on eBay. I got one £10 cheaper than from a store.

Ditto, I dont have my irridium visor on at the moment as when it gets dark I dont want to have a blues brothers moment. Got mine on ebay from Jersey and very nice it is too.

My AGV has a uk road legal irridium visor from Hein G, but it is only very slightly tinted, great if you are silly and get caught out at dusk, less so when you forget it is semi transparent and get caught perving . . . or so my mate reckons

race visors (and equivalent tints like iridium) are normally 50% - in theory race use only but you’d have to be esp unlucky to have a copper lay into you for riding with one during the day, esp if you carry a clear one for the return journeys after hours.

the road legal tints (25%) are actually only technically legal during daylight hours, but the tint is bugger all so you can ride with it on safely all the time (I do)

Maybe our boys in blue can confirm, but to the best of my knowledge, the legal requirement is that visors let in 50% external light. The exterior coating, i.e. iridium is irrelevant. Though I bought a mirror-finish visor recently and the coating just came off after the first wash, I was right pissed off. I’ll stick with regular race-dark visors for the summer. These are illegal, but I’ve never been pulled for one and don’t see why car drivers get a sun-block and we don’t.

Bottom line: no BS or CE mark - it’s not legal.

Therefore, inserts into CE visors are fine. I’m not aware of any CE certified iridium visors, hence they are illegal. But I’m still looking, and I’m looking for the “law” on the matter.

I don’t think the police can help, they can enforce, not interpret.

they need a stamp to be legal otherwise they are deemed illegal.

Those of us smart enough to buy a Schuberth do…

30p from the post office!

Stamp pun… groans

Next time I ask a friend for advice I’ll be sure to add “and give me a smug retort about what I should have bought instead, because after all, I want to feel inferior and not fix my problem, that’s why I asked in the first place.”

Don’t you find the shuberth visor plops down at the wrong time, when you least need it?

eres mine i bought from race visors .com…blue irridium…use it all yea round…no probs so far…and i can see good at night…
