A very VERY long bike ride

Ok so im going Spain on 31st of August with a bike mad mate, so the original plan was, getting a 2day cruise ship to Santander (or something along those lines) and riding from there to the south of Spain on a very combatable Virago 1100 that means nice steady speed of 70 lots of luggage and seat space and a pleasant ride, BUT! we all know that not how it will happen so a few weeks ago I got a call from my mate who’s doing the driving (me on the back)

… IV sold the Virago…

HUH!

Yea IV sold it IV just brought a TL1000…

Okkk …

yea the ones where the exhaust come right up to the pillion seat so pack light because your wearing the backpack AGRH! this means cruise speed of 120 and there in a day but oh no that’s not going to be nice so im after ideas I need some new gear (leathers, boots, ect.) and im going for 2 weeks sooo how do you fit your life in a backpack :-S accommodation all sorted and I got £1000 spending money one person said buy lots of cheap t-shirts and shorts to take up less room and where your done with them throw them away has any one ever done a trip like this before?

HELP!!!

sounds like a great time

no faffing around with lots of luggage

first thing (assuming your mate is male) kick him in the nuts !! then while he’s rolling on the floor you might want to explain the selfish aspects of his choice of vehicles and luggage (punctuating any salient points with your steel toe caps!) then, you need to get your mate to look at some kind of luggage, it may not be possble to put throw-overs on but you should be able to put a tankbag on, and some of those can be pretty big.ventura make some kit especially for sports bikes etc http://www.calamander.co.uk/luggage/ventura/mountings.htm its not really safe or acceptable to expect a pillion to carry a large backpack at speed for long distances, let alone what the change in the center of mass is going to do to the handling once you start moving around!

Thanks all taken into account I shall buy my toe caps tonight

thanks for the link this was the problem we were facing quick light bike 6ft guy driving and 6ft 3 guy on the back with a large amount of weight we don’t need a demonstration to know what wheelie happen next :pinch:

I personally have never been on a bike for more than 2 hours straight and even that was with a few petrol breaks so 28 maybe more hours will take its tole.

what are the chances of becoming tired dose this happen like in a car or is the adrenalin enough to keep a firm hold and eyes open ha-ha well at least if i do slip of the back i have a big backpack to break my fall :ermm:

well you may want to consider one of these http://www.airhawk.co.uk/ I roadtested the basic plastic one the weekend before last and was able to walk after many hours a day in the saddle! yes you do get tired ( a mates wife used to regularly fall asleep on the back of his bike while touring) and your concentration will wander, if you havent done long distance before I would advise breaking up the journey with overnight stops, and regular stops to walk around getting the kinks out (mind you a mate had a TL a few years ago and he struggled to do more than a couple of hours a day on it !):w00t: and forget 120mph touring  you will not stay at that speed for long, that pillion seat is in the gods! I don’t know the range of a TL but am guessing 120-150 per tank that will give you some reprieve, good luck
and if you meant 28hrs non-stop :w00t: vaya con Dios!

Brilliant thanks for all the advice i cant wait to go gona be so fun  lots of snappy moments ill upload when i get back

yeh i agree ,
definately get tired and bored on the back of a bike after a long time
