650 bandt ex pipes

hi guys my friend has a 2007 650 bandt wth about 12,000 miles on it uses it all year round & stays outside under a cover, the stainless steel pipes have chaged a sort of rusty colour at the front, is this normal or not it seems to me it happens where the exhaust gets the hotest i thought it may just be where water salt etc is splashing agaist the exhaust when hot & has just discoloured the pipes.

normal ,what you got to watch out for is where the downpipes join to the silencer, that join is NOT stainless and is where ALL bandits rot and end up blowing, crazy that suzuki have stainless either side but not at the joint ! oh well…:w00t:

Bang on. That’s what’s happened to mine. It was patched for its MOT last year but I don’t think I’ll get away with it this year.

Anyone got any cheap tips or hints to see it through? I only need to get it through an MOT as it’s an eleven year old GSF600 with only 11,500 miles on the clock and I want to keep it as a winter hack. Probably only worth about £800, and aside from the blowing it’s running pretty well. Just shrugged off that last winter with ease but I can’t justify spending loads on it owing to its low value.

again the problem is you got stainless downpipes with mild steel joint and stainless end can with mild steel joint, so depending on which joint is buggered (usually both), you can get a full stainless downpipe set from say DK spares and a full stainless end can from a selection of suppliers , if you’re lucky you can get away with one rather than two… the only way to find out is to take the system apart but by then you’re committed especially if it all falls apart !! :w00t:

thax for the advice banjax,is there a reason for this or any kind of explanation.

not really, just one of those 'what the f**k were they thinking of ? ’ moments !

Cheapest option is probably the repair that Banditmania do @ £85 inc VAT - http://www.banditmania.co.uk/exhaust_systems_&_cans.htm

Or you could possibly get someone to knock up the same thing locally & save a few bob.

Ebay is always a possibility for a cheap set of headers, but bearing in mind that it’s 10 years since that model was last made, finding a good set would be tricky, you could easily end up splashing out on a set that are no better than your own, I’d want to see them close up before handing the hard earned over.

Cheers for the link. As you say, it’s a risk, and not exactly a cheap one at that. I think I either need a sympathetic MOT tester, or I’ll sell it with 3 months MOT left on it and see if I can get anywhere near its value.
