Just double check on issues around warranty cause I’m assuming it’s a new bike, right? Not really clued up on waranty issues so maybe another member will know if it has to be a dealer or can be an independent…
Yep. Bought new. Thought there was some ruling that independent services would not void warrantee so long as they followed the service requirements. owever, this is my first new bike so not sure.
I like Chiswick Honda, that’s where I take my Honda. I figured I should take it there seeing as it was Honda and all (which was my simple approach to finding a garage for servicing). I’ve had pretty positive experiences with them. Apparently there is cheaper out there but I wouldn’t know as I’ve only ever been there.
The 600 mile service is very important because the bike needs to be checked over more than ‘serviced’. Apologies if this is common knowledge but new bikes come partially assembled and the dealership mechanics complete the assembly of the bike when they take it out of the crate and carry out the pre-delivery inspection (pdi). Most new bikes and scooters come with thin engine oil from the factory because the engine is new and tight so after 600 miles of running in, the oil is changed for proper stuff and the bike is checked over to verify everything is correctly torqued and within manufacturer’s spec.
Most dealerships can give free/discounted first service if you bought the bike from them. Independant garages can carry out thr 1st service too but realistically they would not know about common faults to check for on a new bike, not too mention torque settings and/or error codes. Many manufacturer’s will wave the warranty small print at you if you go out of there ‘service net’ and things go wrong with the bike.
I would explain to the service manager why you are doing your 1st service with him and if he/she can give you a discount as a new customer. I doubt they will turn you down as they want to retain and grow their customer base in the current financial climate. The Dec/Jan period is very quiet for the two-wheeled industry so he/she may need the work to keep the mecanics working.
Will my Honda manufacturer’s warranty be affected if my motorcycle is serviced by a non Honda Dealer? No, so long as any defects are not the result of any service related issues
If a non Honda Dealer services my motorcycle, do they have to use genuine Honda parts? No, if a part fails and is the cause of an issue of an issue we will not honour warranty on non Honda parts.
They need to check the torque setting on all your fasteners as well. If you could afford the brand new bike then why skimp on important servicing costs? Chiswick Honda
Thanks all. Very useful information. I agree that the first service is the most important - so I would rather take it to a Honda dealer. Have booked in for Friday.
