Just took out an insurance policy for my first bike (keeway rkv 125cc). I am 23 years old and I am a new rider, this is my first bike, I took the policy out with devitt. I pay approximately £45 pcm for 3rd party fire & theft insurance which includes roadside breakdown cover. I have a compulsory excess of £550. I could have gone with cheaper companies but I read a lot of bad reviews so I decided to pay a little extra & go with a company who have been established for a long time.
How much do you new 125cc riders pay for your insurance? and what are your views about your insurance cover?
I’m just going TPO for my 125 scooter. £200 inc free UK breakdown v £550 TPFT which would include £250+ excess. Not worth claiming on insurance if bike is under £2000. Premiums will rocket and you’ll never build up any NCB.
Good points made, the only reason I decided to get TPFT was because a lot of my friends were telling me that 125cc’s are easily nicked by thief’s because they are lightweight so it is a favoured range of bikes for them. I thought that paying the excess is better than your bike getting nicked and not having any cover in this situation by your insurance.
Yes, I’m a soon to be new rider. Though slightly older 36.Fingers crossed I’ll be on 2 wheels by June.
Just get some insurance quotes and toggle the selection to say you’ve had a bike nicked. See how that effects your premium. Read many stories that the new premium after a theft claim was the same as the payout.
See if you can stash a sum of cash to one side so if the little shits do pinch your bike you’re in a position to replace it.
Last March, I paid £253.61 TPFT for MCE which had a £775 excess. I am a similar age to Hold Da Kæft and had no prior experience. The TPO quote was about £80 less, but felt the difference was worth it as something would be better than nothing. That was on the basis of parking off-road in a private car park and social use only though, so excludes commuting.
The quote to renew with them would have cost around £10 more, despite no claims, and now an £850 excess. But as Devitt offered £248.25 and a £350 excess I went with them this time.
Yeah devitt had a fair amount of good reviews on the internet which was one of the reasons why I decided to go with them.
What practical measures to you take to try & stop your bike getting stolen?
I have a strong chain lock & padlock which I use to lock my bike to a secure fitting such as a lampost or bike rack. I use a motorcycle cover so my bike is out of sight.
