I have a 1999 Kawasaki ZX6 G2 which is causing me some problems. During a ride home a couple of days ago, all was normal then without warning the bike lost power and changed engine tone. Much deeper and a “rougher” sound. It wouldn’t idle without dying and then was hard to restart. Restarted, same thing, no power, deeper engine note and won’t idle without user input from the throttle.
I’ve thrown a fair amount of money on it recently with tyres, chain and such and don’t really want to spend any more on it. Does this sound like dirty carbs and running on fewer cylinders? It gets used in all types of weather, lives outside and was stood for a week or so during the snow period over Christmas. Quick/cheap fix at a garage, DIY carb cleaning or something more sinister?
Any thoughts are most welcome. I might try using this as an excuse with the missus’ to get a new steed!
This very much
Check to se if it’s running all cylinders - start it, and spray a small amount of wd40 on each downpipe - that way you can see if they’re all getting hot or not.
If you have cylinders not firing, then I’d suspect plugs / leads / coils
They’re not stick coils like the ZX9, so each coil will supply 2 cylinders.May well be that you have a dodgy coil, a bad earth on a coil, leads breaking down…
same as gurniman said except he,s a bit technical using wd ,start it from cold and spit on your fingers before quickly dabbing em on each downpipe .
if only one pipe is cold drain the relevent float bowl from the drain screw and check it fills again then check the plug etc. i find water in my outside float bowls now and then but i am using pod filters so its my own fault .
but all the above advice on coils, leads is good, if this was a sudden thing i would say its electrical, it may be as simple as one of the coils has come lose on the spark plug… good luck
