Well, I guess there’s no Arai or Dainese stores over there…

No…in Athens we have these special Arai underwear that miraculously protect your whole body in case you have a crash. No need for helmets really

But what is more extraordinary, is that the trafic cop doesnt give a ****

If it’s not against the law, why would the traffic cop care, he’s not the road safety fairy.

Road traffice laws are the same in the whole of Europe. Yes riding without a helmet is also illegal in Greece. But seems that nobody cares

I never even noticed the no helmet thing on my first look, its not smart, safe and is a death waiting to happen but so what they all look like there enjoying there ride and its still better than being stuck in a car

Last time I was in greece, about 4 years ago, there were loads of people riding around with thier helmet on their arm.

I think it was a bit like carrying a legal visor when wearing a dark visor thing here, if they got stopped they could just put the helmet on…

And i thought you was on about the bloke on the far right had a little fella sitting on his handle bars…

The lights are green and noones trying to run the pedestrians over either.

That’s what I thought too!

…and I was expecting you to notice the perfectly formed buttocks of that girl in the far right…

I mean…honestly, what’s wrong with you people?

That pic is pretty damned usual for Greece. I used to ride my moped without a helmet before I moved here…

Don’t think I actually knew anyone with one?

Thank God I didnt learn how to ride in Greece. I would be dead by now. Everyone knows (myself included) of friends who got killed or paralysed mainly because of accidents without helmet.

This is me in greece earlier this year…

Only wore the pi$$pot helmet on the busy main roads between towns, to be honest even if I did crash I wouldn’t have face left anyway! There were no full face lids at the hire place

It is illegal not to wear one and the police do stamp down on tourists during high season apparently. The bandana was worn for fashion (and to stop hair messing up) purpose only… don’t try this at home

im not sure id wanna ride without my lid!!!

Looks good man (not sure bout the pink bandana )

From what I can see in the photo you are in some island right? Well…the police in islands dont really care that much about riders without helmets. They have other things to keep them busy and are very few (police) anyways to do anything about it. Even rental places will give you some crap, WWII helmet to “protect” you in case of a crash.
In mainland Greece things are different, but as you can see its down to the police officer if they stop you to give you a ticket. One time things were so bad, that they used to confiscate your bike if you were seen without a helmet. Obviously that scheme didnt work so they stopped it. I think the law is a bit weird, because it says, you must have a helmet but doesnt say anything about wearing it. Thus, the many people who wear their helmets on their elbows!!!.

I think they used to have a similar problem in Spain (i.e. not many people wearing helmets) but somehow that changed recently. Last time I went to Barcelona everyone was with a helmet. I dont know what it will take for Greeks to do the same, because obviously policing and penalising doesnt work.

I recall that a few years ago Italy (or was it Spain ?) introduced a law making the wearing of helmets compulsary on mopeds, however some bright spark picked up on the fact that although the law said you had to wear a helmet, it didn’t actually specify that you had to wear it on your head !

Hence loads of young people riding around quite legally with them around their elbows rather than disturbing their perfectly coiffured hairstyles !

Yup that the same law that exists in Greece. Hence the reason why everyone normally wears their helmet on their elbows

does it actually specify how large the helmets have to be? you could make a killing (literally) selling minature ones!

um, have to say, despite the raging stupidity of it, i’d love to go for a ride without a lid…
