wow i thought that was all done by machine

very cool  which part is your speciality? or do you make the book yourself all the way from start to finish?

It’s a fabulous skill!

I appreciate any kinds of craftsmanship in the modern 21st century. Not so keen on IT type boring jobs or banking/stockbroking to pay bills and earns money. Craftsmanship however…is a pleasure. Traditional binding with stitching is just such a cool job. Shame the graphics industry has gone digital mostly. Now, books are mostly bound with a lick of glue to its spine. The don’t make books like they used to…except for the kinds like you guys do.

I didn’t realise how much work went into that.

Fascinating mate

Is it a dying art with sales dropping off or is it the sort of thing that will always be in demand because of the quality/craftmanship?

Superb!

Nice one John. It’s good to see age old skills being kept alive and not getting replaced by robots.

That’s amazing; I didn’t realise it all took so long.

Do you see the whole process through from start to finish, or are you in charge of just a few of the stages?

Nice one Choprocker - great to see that some people are keeping the old skills alive.

i do the edge gilding, gold on the edges of the pages but can do a bit of the finishing, gold lettering etc on the covers

its only a small place so do see the whole lot but not involved in it all.

get to do some interesting stuff and a lot of boring stuff too.

use to get this bloke having his porn bound into fancy books, it differed from your everyday porn cos a lot dated from the 30’s/40’s.

also had a funny 1 when the jewish society got some books bound for maggie thatcher and john major (i think was a while back now) the weird thing was it was a book about the extermination camps along with the blueprints of the gas chambers, lol, dont know wot they was trying to suggest maybe something about the growing unemployment at the time, lol.

did you know that the nazi’s use to bind books in human skin?

also when we moved shop a fair few yrs back we cleared the place out as we were the trainees at the time and come across a full python skin about 10ft long, obviously it was there to be used to bind a book but me and me m8 liberated it, cut it in half and had a bit each.

oh back to the nazi and porn bit, the same bloke had a book bound 1ce and it was during nazi occupation (book published) and was of young boys, pervy cvnt.
