Working on own bike...

Am looking to do some mantainance work on my cg. My first bike, so i will be experimenting and trying to work things out.

What kind of tools would I need? What would I need to change, look out for, maintain?

Any advice will be appriciated!

Get the haynes manual mate/a decent service manual…will tell u how 2 do evrything and even strip and rebuild her if u wanted!

As for tools well depends how much u got to spend…A good ratchet, spanner and general screwdriver set is a must but there are loads of bike specific tool such as a chain splitter…

Really sky is the limit when u come to tools, im gonna have some pimp snap on set when i have my own place as i wanna work on my bike and car all the time

haynes is a good place to start…
Get some little plastic boxes like ice cream trays or ice cream cartons - as you remove bolts and stuff put them in there and put the lid on as if you lay them near the bike you’ll kick them and lose them…I’ve been there and it aint funny…
Got a camera phone? If you’re going to take something to bits and you’re not sure take a pic - you’ll then know that when you put it back together it looks like it was when you started.
As you remove bits (and if you have space) put the bits in the order you remove them so you start with the right bit when you come to put it together again.

If you have spare bolts when you’re finished something has gone wrong…

What kind of tools would I need to adjust my chain?

Is this adviced as I have no experience?

just a few spanners and a can of spray lube

agree with the comment re getting a haynes manual, or there are sevarel people selling workshop manuals on cd’s on ebay, just print the pages you need

imho anyone who rides a bike should be able to adjust the chain

anything like this is simple if you break the job down into very small pieces, dont get flustered by the thought of having bits of bike all over the place, just think of it as a series of smaller tasks and give yourself plenty of time to do anything

one of the best things i ever got told was when using haynes manuals, photocopy the page you are using first, and then you wont get the book covered in crap

oh and ps, if you havent got any proper hand cleaner for when your done mix washing up liquid with sugar to get out the dirt

macp quote “if you have spare nuts and bolts left over something has gone wrong…”

either that or my dad has snuck round, always used to place a couple of random ones around bike/car when i was making a cuppa when i used to fix stuff when i lived at parents… he’s getting old now ill get my revenge soon

Same here! And mine never threw anything away either!

Thanks for the advice all, will be popping into halfords this weekend to have a look at some tools.

Any other recommendations to where to buy from?

Halfords do some decent stuff now. Good as any really - not to expensive and fine for the home user.
