It’s the first year with Heated Grips and I’m wearing my Winter Gloves that have a thinsulate lining – I suspect my hands are getting no warmer than if I didn’t have the Heated Grips because the gloves are not letting the heat through – is this possible? Should I be wearing slightly thinner gloves? Or, is it just damned cold this year 'cos my fingers are freezing after just 15 minutes?
The heated grips are working perfectly as I’ve taken to stopping, removing the gloves and warming my hands on them!
it sounds like your gloves are not letting the heat through. sorry cant give any advice and as I write this I wonder if I have added anything or just increased my post count by +1
I’ve asked around on this one and it would appear that Phantomgixer (upping his post count), stevo, 5150 and Panagiotis are on to something – Mega-protective Winter gloves don’t work with heated grips and you must have wind protection on the bars for any glove to work. Gonna try some Acerbis protectors and let you know how I get on 'cos I just cannot stand the pain no more!
I looked into heated gloves (battery-operated as I ride different bikes) but the only pair apparently worth getting are over £200!!
Tested the grips and they both heat to the same temperature but when I’m riding my right hand gets too hot and I can’t feel the heat with the left hand.
Maybe I should wear a summer glove on the left and a winter glove on the right
You really don’t need battery-powered heated gloves - harnesses to run heated gloves from the bike’s own electrical system are inexpensive (£10-ish), so you could easily fit one permanently to each bike.
I feel that buying heated kit requires a bit of mental readjustment. You’re investing in your own comfort and alertness. Yes, it seems at first examination somewhat pricey, but it will last many seasons and entirely end the misery of being cold. Does it not seem odd to spend several thousand pounds on a bike and then try and live without the one piece of kit that guarantees you’ll always be able to enjoy riding it, however cold it may be?
I have an exo heated waistcoat thingy. Because it keeps my “core” warm my body doesnt try to reduce the blood supply to my hands and feet and therefore my hands dont get cold. Well, they DO get cold but it takes ages. I have a good pair of winter gloves (Frank Thomas I think, im not on the bike today)
I find exactly the same thing, all I can put it down to is the right hand grip is insulated from heat loss to the bar by the plastic throttle tube - or I have odd hands as well
Summer gloves & 75% power on the grips works well for me
Strange… My left hand always gets cold WAY before my right hand does. I don’t have heated grips but I’ve been tempted to get some… until I read all this and now questioning how useful they’d be… Besides, it’s my fingertips that get the coldest, and they’d get the elast heat from the grips so… meh
