Which Tyre for DRZ SM

When I bought the DRZ it had the OE Dunlop tyres on which were ok actually normally don’t get on with Dunlops. I seem to have smoked the rear in the six months I have had it and want to get something a bit more moto orientated. I have been recommended all of the above but not sure which to go for. Not bothered about tyre life, not going to be on track this summer I am afraid, so only road use and predominately commuting.

The street sport seem to make the most sense but just wanted a few more opinions before I buy.

Just seen that Maxxis and Goldspeed are the same tyre but different name

also any ideas where to get them fitted, I normally go to Essential rubber but they are quoting £25 per tyre for fitting which seems a bit steep to me.

I have the Street Sports which are easily better than the standard Pirellis fitted to my CCM.

Would recommend buying some kit and fitting yourself.
A lot easier on these type of tyres/bikes than sports models and also provides a
good deal of satisfaction when the job is done.
(Changed my first set last year and a lot easier than I had imagined  )

On my XT I had a ProXtreme wet on the front and a Distanzia on the rear, and I loved that setup. Apparently the ProXtreme on the rear is also good, but it lasts about 1000 miles. I got very decent mileage out of my setup.

Essential rubber change my tyres for £10 each when I bring wheels/Tyres to them. Last time I asked for maxxis they said they dont sell budget Tyres lol try Avon px front and Distanzia rear as most say it’s best combo for supermoto’s

PXR (Pro-Xtreme Rain) front / Distanzia rear - my favourite combo on my 520EXC. But what prompts me to post is to correct your report that PXR rear lasts about 1,000 miles - very wrong actually. They are Xtremely good for wet/cold weather grip but, while you can expect about 4k miles from a front, you’d be lucky to get more than 500 out of a rear - and that’s in the wet. In warm dry conditions it’d be shagged in about 300. (I usually get just under 2k miles from Distanzia rear btw.) As you were

PXR front again here
Rear anything really, dunlop mutant at the moment on my 530.
PXR rear, after 800 cold, wet, winter miles wasn’t legal to ride on the road but off road on green lanes was still best of all I tried.

ok I will have a rethink and look at the Pxr/Distanzia combo.

thanks guys your input is much appreciated:D:D

I have been trawling forums and moto tyres seem to be a bit of a mine field what one loves the other hates etc. . . . . . . . but the PXR Distanzia seems to get universal praise, will have to give Essential a ring see if they can get some in for me

Don’t forget FWR, they nearly always have stock of PXRs and Distanzias - and generally have the Goldspeed/Maxxis range too. Also competitive with their pricing.

BTW if you’re going with Avons, especially Distanzia rear, you need to be mindful that they are slightly wider than most other tyres. I don’t know but I’m assuming your DRZ has a 4.25" rim? If so then get a 150, which is the correct fitment for that rim. A 160 will go but is not ideal, will slow down handling and may foul the chain. If it’s a 5" rim then it should be 160 - but more likely to foul the chain or even the swingarm. A 150 will go on 5" but again, not ideal. (I had a 150 Distanzia on 5" rim on my EXC for a while - because of the resultant unnaturally flat profile I got to the edges of the tyre with relatively little lean and I was always worried I’d be running out of rubber on fast corners - never actually slid away from me but I was never confident with it.)

That is all

I have heard some bad things about FWR, not just on here either, and I have to ride past Essential Rubber to get to them.
I have always had great service from ER so its a bit of a no brainer really. They have ordered them in so will let you all know how I get on when they arrive.:D:D

Oh really? Do tell

I live near ER but work near FWR and over the years I’ve been to both about an equal number of times I reckon. Usually depends on who has stock of what I want at the time. And I’ve never had cause to complain about either. (But I always get MOT testing done at ER, don’t know why, just always have.)

How much did they quote you at ER for Tyres fitted? Don’t forget to ask for you 10% LB discount after they give you price

have a look here

this is Jay’s story and there are many others on here and on the internet, guy on the MCN forum had his chain snap and binned his R1 as a result blamed on badly fitted rear tyre. I know there are also people who praise the place but my mechanical knowledge is zip so need somewhere I can trust and that is ES.

As for a quote they couldn’t give me one as they have got to order the tyres in for me so will ring with a price once they are in. Will post when I know:D

Berlimey! I read probably about a quarter of that thread but I certainly get the gist. Glad you brought that to my attention, I’ll be exercising extreme caution with any future dealings I may have with FWR.

Keep in mind that thread is 5 years old. I’ve never had problems with them, nor have I heard of anybody who has lately.

A prime example of good reputations being very hard to gain but so easy to destroy. This won’t stop me going to FWR for tyres. I’ve been using them for years and, like I said, never had anything to complain about. I’ll just be extra careful to make sure everything’s been fitted correctly and all the relevant bolts are at the correct torque. (Really we should all do that as a matter of course no matter who fits our tyres, it’s our lives at stake after all  )PS How are you getting on with the SD?

Really good! It’s broken in and ready for its first service now (Tuesday). I’ve been running it in using the “careful” method  but had a good blast on it last night, and it just makes me grin.
It’s a very easy bike to ride, but every now and them it’ll remind you to treat it with respect. Really awesome! Everybody should try one

Will be on a BCR soon I hope.

Glad your liking it. I’d really love to own a supadook but couldn’t justify it unfortunately (can’t live without my supermoto and can’t afford 2 bikes - nowhere to keep 2 bikes either). And I have ridden one, nicely tricked up it was too - awesome!Won’t be going on any BCRs for a while unfortunately - I’ve been squandering my day passes on track days lately, and spending the weekend after next at Rowrah - can’t wait!Keep up the good work

Well boots came in yesterday, fitted this morning, £190 on the bike which I think is not too bad. ES did there usual great job.

Front end feels very different, seems to turn in faster, and feels a bit lighter which is not a bad thing, no chain snag with the 150 rear, although was a squeeze to get it on.

Thanks for the advice, I will update soon as to what they are really like once they have been scrubbed in a bit.

Just fitted PXR front and Distanzia rear tyres  Very happy after first ride on the road, will try them off-road this weekend.

Could you advise on pressure ?
