Which rear tyre for road use in and around London?

It’s a toss up between these:

Never ran the pre-cut slicks before so just wondered if anyone has and has an opinion? I’ve got a goldspeed wet on the front and the rear doesn’t have to have as much grip, just wondered if the pre-cut slick would be too much of a nightmare in the wet on London streets or if it won’t be too bad?

Cheers!

Given the blurb on the site, I would not think rainy london is where you want to try these pre-cut slicks…

pre-cut slick won’t be what you want on there in the wet mate! look at the tyre, where are the channels for the water to displace?!

the street sport ultras should be good though. i was going to go for one of those but they’re out of stock and i had to put one on pronto so opted for the normal street sports. already prefer it over the distanzia it replaced.

I’ve already told you my thoughts on that tyre :stuck_out_tongue:

Cheers ad, I kind of suspected that, the street sports are back in stock next week so I’ll wait for one of those I think

Alright clever-clogs! I think I was just attracted to it for the pose-value…nothing posey about lying on your arse in the middle of a wet road though I suppose

Have you looked at these …

Avon Roaddrider as recommended by Essential Rubber and they’re cheap as chips to boot.

I was gonna go for the Ultra’s some time ago too. The guy there (Tony?) advised the for the winter it would be no good and to go for the cooking one (the street Sport). That turned out to be unimpressive so I went back to the BT090 the Essential have always advised me to use. The BT090 is the best full road I’ve tried.

Thanks Art and Sneaky :), I only wanted a Goldspeed cos I’m running a 16.5" front rim and the only road legal tyre I can find for that rim is the Goldspeed wet (which I have on there), so I was just going to get a Goldspeed for the rear too to ‘match’, I think I’ll give the Street Sport Ultra a go as the ‘summer’ is coming :D, but no doubt I’ll change when that ones done so I will try your suggestions in the future!

Allanj has an Ultra on his KTM, he said he wasnt over joyed with it, I think he said that this brand of tyre make the KTM’s weave at high speed? Allan, wherefore art thou?

You called, Sire?

No, as you say, not overjoyed wiv me Ultra. Found it sliding around quite a bit yesterday at times when I would have expected it to grip. Might be pressure though, was running 28psi and it might be better with something like 24. I’ll try that for a bit before giving up on it and going back to my favourite rear (Avon Distanzia 150 on 4.25" rim - absolutely brilliant all-weather tyre, its agricultural looks put a lot of folk off tho). Had similar probs with the GS pre-cut slick. Found it gripped really well but when pushed too far it would let go completely and without warning, had me off twice while experimenting with pressures, I gave up in the end and flogged it.

The worst thing about goldspeeds though is “death weave” - where the front goes disconcertingly light at speed and the bike starts weaving from side to side, a phenomenon that only seems to affect KTMs. Was suffering quite a bit from that yesterday, helped to keep my speed down did that! I’ll definitely be riding with Distanzia rear on the next BCR even if I stick with the Ultra for the commute

mmm I’m also really liking my Distanzia on the rear… I actually liked the farm look as I thought it might be a bit better offroad… however in mud I found out it wasn’t

Still got a PXR on the front but not sure what to do when that comes to it’s end.

Yes pity PXR has become a thing of the past. When mine goes I’ll replace it with a modified race wet.

Thanks Allan for your input mate. Hopefully I won’t get the ‘death weave’ on my ape with the ultra, but I’m going to give it a go - defo not going for the pre-cut slick now cos I certainly don’t want to find myself on my arse because of the rear tyre.

+1 on the pxr btw, was also my fav 17" front.
