What laptop?

Im after a new laptop as mine has seen better days but its done me proud, its lasted 4 years and survived a tour of iraq although it did lose a few buttons out there :w00t:

I need a laptop for general use such as word and powerpoint for when i have to do presentations and what not at work, i need it for my music, dvds, simple games, internet mostly using a dongle as i move from place to place alot but wifi aswel and the main thing editing HD video from my helmet cam.

I dont want to be breaking the bank too much but i realise im gona have to be spending atleast around £700 to get sumat decent thats upto the job of editing/watching HD footage.

Can anyone recomend good manufaturers to be looking at? Im drawn to Dell as its the most well known name to me and my current one is Dell and all the computers and laptops at work are Dell too but im open to checking out others

Cheers

Macbook Pro.

Well you might not get a Macbook Pro for £700, but would deffo recommend a Macbook!!
I swapped to Apples a few years back, and love 'em.
Don’t be put off by the thought of changing to OSX, its just so much easier than Windows to use. And second to none for editing media.

Cue ‘I’m a Mac, no I’m a PC’ argument…

ps. How’s the boots??

Dell cheap and cheerful and I havnt had any problems yet after 2 years

Not had chance to try the boots out on the slopes yet. Hopefully i’ll get up there in the next week or so but i’ll be getting plenty of use when i go to france in 3 weeks  Was worried about getting my passport pack in time but it took less than 2 weeks from sending off the form to getting me new one  Its amazing how quick you can get things when you say your going to ummm a warmer climate

Still waiting on the new board and bindings though, sayin that they are proberbly sat in the post room waiting for me, well i hope they are anyway. Id like to give them a try out before me hol too

Macbook as an entry level thing £800… you’ll love i think and in future end up with a Macbook Pro

duno about cheap after ive finished adding all the bits to it :w00t: Certainly been cheerful with the one i have atm though but im in need of alot more power now

think this should help alot http://www.ebuyer.com/use em alot my self

Lenovo Thinkpads and Apple Macbooks tend to be really well put together. The new lenovos aren’t as well made as they were when they were IBM, but they’re still pretty good.
The newer Dells appear to be reasonably well put together, too.

I’d also recommend Apple Macbook range. I wouldn’t ever get another laptop from the likes of Compaq/Dell/Acer etc…

Apple run on a system that has an extremely low chance of picking up virus’s, are easy to use, don’t freeze, have excellent battery life, etc… etc… etc…

I’ve lost count of the amount of glitches, bugs and virus’s I’ve had to deal with in the last 4 years I’ve had this Compaq Pressario laptop. Not to mention all the upgrades I have to keep forking out for. Updated RAM, Memory, Graphics… The list goes on! :doze:

What I love about Apple is that the devices (whilst not indestructable) are pretty much future proof. Also, Apple’s customer service is exellent. I’ve yet to have a problem with them.

Go Apple!

Everyones pointing to the macbook but ive just found out i get a discount with dell and also tax free as im at a bfpo address  So im thinking i may go with that cause the macbooks do look great but ive just put what i wanted and its nearly a grand and a half… seeing as ive had no trouble with my current dell i think i’ll prob get another. Thanks for all the opinions guys and gals, maybe when i have a higher budget or they do the same offer as Dell i shall go for a macbook

Entirely your choice buddy! After all, you’re the one who has to use it!

Lastly though, think about the amount of money you will need to spend on all the extras with Dell (Microsoft Office, antivirus protection etc…), and the fact that you get pretty much everything with the Apple. I think the only extras you need to buy for the Macbooks is Microsoft Office, or just a copy of Word and Powerpoint. And you can usually find a copy of this off one of your mates!

Yeah but the dell ive built online comes in at less than a grand tax free but not including my dicount and is more powerfull than the mac.

Got to say that not one of the IT companies mention provide what I would even good support.

I have many dealings with Apple, IBM, Compaq, HP, (before and after the merger) and many others.

The current state of support they are all shite. 1 Month old 24" iMac with additional 3 year Apple Care, went dead. No on site support, return to Apple 28 day turn around or take it to an Apple store for a two week turnaround. That for just under £3K

IBM/Lenovo business class laptop had to be returned to IBM/Levono for repair as they no longer provide on site repair. Eighteen day turnaround!!! I had a hard one explaining that to the client.

The support provide now is just utterly crap no matter who or what you buy. And Mac’s aren’t immune either, they have their share of problems and viruses. Yes I have had to clean viruses from an iMac. A lot of virus or malware infections are due to users. And as Mac OS and Apple become more numerous then the more they will be targeted.

How many viruses have been written to target Win 95, 98 or ME in the last five years? Very few because they represent such a small percentage of the installed OSes.

Not starting a Mac Vs. Windows argument, just I know the support provide by them all is utter crap compared how it used to be. HP eight years had the best support system I had used. Alas it is dismantled and move to India and the rest was outsourced.

Right up until some of Bill Gates’ gremlins start f**king up your software/hardware… :w00t: :PMy personal choice will always be the Apple, even if it’s just for the customer service. I went into the Apple Store with my Iphone and said it had been dropped. They just unwrapped a new one on the spot, plugged it into their laptop, changed the simcard and handed it over. Walked out of the shop within 15 minutes with a brand new IPhone! :)I must admit, I do miss the tax free stuff and the BFPO free delivery!

If i can blag a good deal from apple id maybe go for one but i havent had problems with my 4 year old laptop yet, apart from a few missing buttons… its just not got enough juice to play/edit my cam footage. All the advice is much apreciated mind

Like you say, if it aint broke, don’t fix it! If you’re happy with them, stick with them!

I’m pretty sure you’ll make a huge saving on any laptop you go for, being in Germany and getting the Tax-free etc…
Have you had a look at the prices over there? If you buy from a local place the only thing you’ll need to do is change the computer language in your settings. Might save a bit more that way as well.

What would you go for then?

If you’re going to switch to the Apple versions for an OSX laptop, you might as well switch to the free win32 ones for Windows. OpenOffice.org, Thunderbird etc.

I tend to buy second hand. Support and fix things as and when needed as that is what I do for living (apart from taking mind altering stuff).

If you are looking at new then have a look at www.trustedreviews.com.

Currently laptop wise looking at the HP NC6400 or a Macbook (Black) unfortunately the former with a certain config is like hens teeth, and the later second makes hen’s teeth look cheap.
