Just curious, had a debate with a friend on this and we were wondering what was required on a UK bike (assuming it’s a new bike, no MOT issues and no bike pre-I-was-born thing).
So, we thought it was not required to have mirrors and indicators, but to have a headlamp and a breaking light. It was required to also have a number plate in a certain size, etc. as well as no race can. That’s about it. We had one argument about the headlamp - my buddy was suggesting that potentially between some hour in the morning and the late afternoon it was ok to ride without one fitted to bike - i wasn’t sure.
Anyone has any views on what’s “legal” and only recommended?
I’ll dig some stuff out from my mate who went through all this when he was building his custom BMW… but as I understand it the bike does need to have a right hand mirror and indicators if is was built after a certain point… I believe you can ‘get away’ without them if the bike was built before they where compulsary.
Depends on if it has a daytime mot or full mot. If you had a track bike, it would be possable to ride it on the road without headlight if it had a daytime MOT.
The MOT is for some reason more stringent. I think you can ride a bike that is recent, and thus doesn’t require a MOT, without indicators and mirrors but you need the headlight if you drive past a certain time in the evening (since you don’t need MOT you probably need nothing to justify it except saying it’s a recent bike without need for MOT yet) and braking light.
I am thinking of calling a copper or DVLA to find out…
