Bike stolen/getting raped is not quite a decent comparison.
Simple common sense is that you don’t leave desirable stuff unsecured. Not in London or, probably, any town.
Would you expect me to have sympathy with someone parking their flash motor and leaving the keys in the ignition? Or leaving their Rolex on the counter while they tried on a new suit at the other end of the shop?
Sadly, it’s us mugs that do lock things up that will be paying his insurance compensation.

It’s not OK, but it will happen. Random scum are everywhere in this world and they target the desirable stuff. If you have something desirable, and given how easy it is to purchase stuff from where you buy the bike, you need to secure it in the best way possible. I think this is the point that oldguy was making.

the thieves prob just lobbed it in a van. you lot are kidding yourselves that your precious chains and alarms will do more than inconvenience the thieves in the vast majority of cases. even with long chains half the time there isn’t a lamp-post or something solid to lock the bike to, and even less options if its daytime and a bike bay.
i’m still amazed that most of you think its fine that someone’s bike was stolen and that because he parked in a bike bay he deserved it. even with chains and locks, i cant park my r1 with any degree of comfort on the road. I have to go to west london tonight and still no clue what i’m going to do with the bike for the hour i need to be there.
I must agree with SheWoolf , doesn’t matter if he was naked or in shorts and slippers. He paid earned (easy money or hard money doesn’t matter) money for that bike, it was his and no one elses property. Why would anyone help themselfs to something they don’t deserve? Just because you can do something it doesn’t give you the right to do so. Maybe we need some Islamic laws, you steal chop off the hand stole with!!! In this instance I assume both hands would be acceptable.
I must say when I was working in Holborn I used to carry a cover with me, chain and disk lock, was covering the bike up, chain through cover, disk lock through cover. If I could be lucky and get a spot near Infinity where they had anchors then even better otherwise I would have to hope they didn’t bother with mine considering there were 100 bikes all around mine unlocked without covers. This cost me about £150 and it only took me about 5 minutes extra every time I would get to work or leave home.

I’ve only ever left my bike in a bay a couple of times, luckily most of the sites I vist in london have secure parking. If not I park at one that has and walk/tube it to the one i need to be at 
It is an inconvinence carrying a chain on a sports bike and personally I wont carry it in my pack pack in case i come off. So only a disk lock for me…
