SOUTH WOODFORD: Pedestrian killed in collision with police motorbike
By Dominic YeatmanAN ELDERLY pedestrian was killed late last night in a collision with a marked police motorcycle in the A406 Southend Road, South Woodford.
An ambulance was called after the collision at 11pm, and the man, who is thought to have been in his 60’s was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have not yet identified the man and next of kin have yet to be informed.
advertisementAn investigation has been launched by the Metropolitan Police’s collision investigation unit at Alperton.
The investigation will be overseen by the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards and the Independent Police Complaints Commission have been informed.
A post-mortem will take place today at East Ham Mortuary.
it is always sad but a fact of life that something moving sooner or later will stop…and hopefully it is stopped with planned intent, but sometimes it isnt…

No, I do have friends that are/were at Chadwell Heath Traffic Unit. That may be were the rider was from? I’d not ask, and they’d never tell. These guys get such a grilling over just a fender-bender, let alone a fatal RTA.
As someone who has had a fatal accident driving a Police van I can tell you it is a nightmare.I had an extremely drunk pedestrian walk in front on the way to a call,I had witnesses who supported my story and the physical evidence of the crash plus medical evidence.
I was not allowed to drive for months and had to attend the Coroners inquest in front of a jury,although you know you’re in the right it was still a very hard time.
The saving grace was that I knew it was’nt my fault and was driving again straight after ther verdict,still very wary of pedestrians,especially around the West End where I work now.
I hope I never have to deal with an incident like this, and as has previously been said if it can happen to the police riders (who are trained to ride safely, esp. while working) it can happen to any of us.
I had a pedestrian walk out in front of my car a few years ago but luckily it was just a glancing blow and all was OK. i know how that made me feel. I can’t even begin to imagine what goes through someones head after a serious or fatal accident like that.
You have to feel for the families of both the old fella and the rider. There but for the grace of God and all that:doze:
