Washing textiles

My textiles are absolutely fucking filthy. They’re goretex. I’d put them in the wash but won’t that ruin the waterproofing?

washing machine on delicate mode did it for me… no idea about the waterproofing

Add nikwax for goretex in the washing machine to restore waterproofing

This is what I’ve used

http://www.nikwax.com/en-us/products/productdetail.php?productid=268&itemid=-1&fabricid=-1

I’ve used this on my textiles before after washing them http://www.berghaus.com/nikwax-tx-direct-spray—300ml/41112236.html I also picked up some wax that was good for boots and textiles at the last bike show I went to, I will try and get the name for you as it’s pretty good stuff.

This.

Don’t use fabric conditioner and make sure any leftover gunky residue is cleaned out of the drawer before you wash. It’s the fabric conditioner that screws up breathability (although I reckon another wash would probably solve the problem)

I use techwash but regular laundry detergent is fine https://www.gore-tex.co.uk/support/washing-instructions

Nikwax produce a separate washing and waterproofing product. Both can be done in the washing machine on delicate/hand-wash setting. Full instructions attached to the labels of both products.

Nikwax green for washing, purple for waterproofing. I prefer the spray to waterproof after running them with green in a handwash programme in the washing machine

One thing… Don’t expect them to be good as new. I was never able to get them back to like when they were new and the water just rolled off

just to put a pisser on Nikwax

I use https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000XY27KE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

works a treat for me on both my textiles and gloves

my gear has been totally waterproof

I put my textiles on a 40 degrees wash and soak

That can't allow the clothes to be breathable?

its been fine so far totally waterproof & Breathable with my RST Textiles not forgetting I don’t have a 5min commute like some

canvas has to be breathable as well

& I do remember its be quoted on the KTM forum & a few other off road webby sites

Hmmm, interesting. Might try it on a cheaper piece of clothing first… Can it be simply applied on with cloth. Thinking of making some shoes as a starting point.

I used an old cleaner spray bottle and for the first time 2 coats let the first dry

don’t do it indoors it smells

once its dry there is no smell

Waitrose sell this stuff that I use to wash my ski gear and then Nikwax to waterproof again.

This is much cheaper than Nikwax wash.

Thanks everyone

Do not use any water proofing wash in on goretex, it will just clog he pores and make a mess.

For goretex you just need nixwx tech wash.

The goretex website has a video specifically saying you can use wash in waterproofing

This is a great deal for the price.

Also - a gentle tumble-dry (ie not too long or hot) is supposed to re-invigorate the waterproofing

And make sure you do a non important wash after nikwax etc …it can leave a slimy residue which doesnt do delicates well
