Was it just me or was it bleedin' slippery out there this evening?

Riding home this evening in that horrible drizzle, got to Waltham cross and the roundabouts felt really slippy. It’s a new bike to me but I’ve not felt that before. It really felt like I was going to lose it on every bend. One corner I did feel the rear go a bit…

I reckon it was the drizzle just lifting all the crap off the road… anyone else experience this?

Carman dont loose the bike, weve got the Rutland rideout tomorrow.

nah twas fun on the way home! i did think it was gonna get slippery, but it didnt feel to bad.

See those X8s are rubbish!

I rode home in drizzle on the X9 and the bike felt very solid and secure all the way home.

I know!! I’m hoping the weather won’t be like the essex rideout that I went on - I was soaked before I even got to the first meet point on that one!

When I rode the X8 home from Thompsons it was in torrential rain but it never felt like it was going to slide out like this evening. It was OK in London too around the Apex corner and the M25 roundabout it was just the A10 and Waltham cross, I could just feel that the tyres weren’t gripping the road very well, I can’t really describe why or how, I just knew.

The rear tyre on the scoot is a bit worn but the front was OK. I rode 300 miles at the weekend and never had that feeling - even though it did rain a bit now and then. I guess it was just the particular road conditions.

dunno about you, but i seem to have the odd ‘off’ day, where i generaly dont ride well, bike feels 'orrible, tyres feel like they are goona let go any minute! we all have them now and again i think:)

Could be that, but the rear tyre definitely skidded out a bit on one town bend, I even heard it, and it wasn’t like I’d given it loads of welly!! If it was an off day it must have been an off 15 minutes because the first 20-30mins of the ride were fine  The scoot was running well, getting me through traffic etc.

Maybe it just doesn’t like Waltham cross - can’t say I blame it…!!

Of course the worn rear tyre won’t have helped it’s still legal but just below 2mm. The front should be OK though for a while.

could have been spilt fuel from something?

yeah maybe it was a bad 15 minsutes! lol:D hmm dont really go through there much, i stick to the lanes, crooked mile etc:D

i recently changed my front tyre, once scrubbed i it made a huge difrence, in the wet and the dry:cool:

If it makes you feel any better Oldhonny it is very slippy on the roads round my way - even got the old volvo estate to slide

Does make me feel a bit better Grimbusa. I thought it can’t just be me as even though I’m new to this scooter (had it a week today) I’ve already done around 450 miles and not had a feeling like that before - normally it feels superbly stable and quite grippy despite the old tyres.

It’s funny actually but the way the X8 felt riding it this evening was the way I used to feel riding my old Yamaha majesty scooter ALL THE TIME. It constantly felt like it was going to slide from beneath me… I **hated ** it. Possibly not entirely the scooter’s fault as I did have an Avon tyre on the the rear which afterwards I was told are crappy, and who knows what the front tyre was!

Seriously, what tyres have you got? I always felt as you describe on Savas on my vespa in the slightest damp. Others say the same about Pirellis, but I wouldn’t know having never had them.

everywhere i’ve been at the moment the roads have been covered with spots of diesel every 5yards… aaaargh!!!

Maybe coindidence but I did feel it was bad tonight. It was a light drizzle which seemed to just rehydrate the crap on the road surface.

I really noticed is when I road along some zebra crossing zig zags. I was going straight and upright but the front felt terrible. After than I noticed it a lot more elsewhere.

I took it pretty steady after that.

Yes That’s what I felt, after going up the A10, round a roundabout turning right I thought I wasn’t going to make it as I couldn’t crank it over very far for fear of sliding off.

The tyres are the original equipment Michelin gold standards, I think they have a very good reputation. The rear now has 10,000miles and will need replacing fairly soon as the centre section is quite worn. Normally I wouldn’t say the tyres are a problem as the grip is quite good (I’m getting nearer to grounding the stand out I think) but tonight it was just so slippy out there, the worn nature of the rear made it worse but I did notice the front felt unsure too - probably a lot to do with the weight distribution on the scooter as I didn’t notice the rear feeling nervous so much until it actually started to slide!!

oh… and another thing… I just got rid of my Fazer FZ6s… and bought a Husqvarna sm610s Supermoto… Its all true… they do go round bends far better… and in the wet too… handles in the wet… although not on diesel!!! aaargh!!

… hey aren’t you meant to go sideways round bends with one leg sticking out in front on those things!!

I was nearly doing that on my scooter this evening

I blew out Terry-Moto’s rideout this evening because I thought the ride up to the Ace was pretty 'orrible. Sort of sticky drizzle that got everything really wet and made the visor all blurry, made the road feel blurry too. SheWoolf was encouraging me to go by calling me “Wuss!” but the drizzle actually got worse later and I was glad I didn’t go - got drenched on the North Circ going home. Hope they’re ok, 'cos hooning round back roads in that muck was going to be tricky.

MGS are certainly very good on the X9 - I almost never get down to the wear limit on my tires, I usually change them long before then when they lose the profile.

Well I managed not to lose the bike riding 211miles on a rideout today, though I did have one back end and one front end slip!! I was scared as anything at some of it.Only in the wet though - the tyres - even the back one seemed fine in the dry. I reckon the front end slip was a bit of dodgy road repair I happened to go over while slightly cornering.

I was cornering like a right wuss for most of the rideout on the wet roads, though on the way home the M25 sliproad Eastbound at South Mimms I managed to get the Scooter cranked right over with no problems… but then it was dry!!

Slippy!? You can use it to your advantage to get directly to the front of the rideout, but make sure there is an ambulance waiting! :w00t:
