Wanted Steering damper for '99 CBR600

New they’re a fortune for older bikes and nothing on Ebay…

How comes you need one the bike matey?

I’ve ridden a few 600’s and not really ever noticed any 600cc that needs a steering damper bar the ZX6 B1h (due to the hard rear it wants to shake its head a fair bit) and possibly the newer generation bikes

Is your suspension set up properly? if not… that will help heaps!

No it’s always as solid as a rock but I’m just being procautionary. Think it’s unessecary? I want to do Silverstone and I know it’s superfast cornering there and it make me nervous.

Any advice would be good though, it’s my first bike and I’m finding my feet.

I’m finding the suspension set up a minefield too!

If you’re bike doesn’t normally suffer from headshake/slapping on the road, it is highly unlikely that it will on a smooth racetrack. You should be fine without it.

I’d agree with that…Spend the money on getting your suspension revalved with better components and set up for your weight by a professional.

That makes a big difference to how you feel on the bike and can dial out any handling problems.

I took my R1 to HM Racing in Orpington and was pleased with the results.

It it’s a Focussed Events day, there will be a suspension crowd called Race Lab that can setup your bike for a fee (can’t remember how much it was) - I am well happy with what they did with my bike.

When do you plan on doing Silverstone? And which circuit are you doing?

I’m doing a CSS day there next Thursday then thinking of doing the international next bank holiday. There’s a couple of places left. I think thats Focused Events too so maybe I can look out for those Race Lab guys to sort my suspension.

I don’t want to spend a wedge on uprating the suspension as it’s an old bike and my first. Want to learn/trash this one and then spend the wonga on better bike next year.

Dont bother with re-valving, re-shimming etc on a 99 CBR 600. waste of both time and money. By time you spend £300+ quid on decent suspension, a few quid on decent tyres you could have bought a much newer bike for the money…

see if you can work with what you have, doubt it will be in the best of shape but for your bike experience i reckon you wont be far out (thats not criticising im just saying the bike will handle much more than you can probably throw at it at the moment)

Dont think you have to worry about headshake on an old 99 CBR 6 mate, go ride it and have fun!

although Rockinham National isnt the smoothest of track Especially the Double Apex Right Hander before the LH to go up the slope!

Set it up close to PB (Performance bike) setting and you wont be far out…

Then again what sort of mileage has the bike (suspension components) done?

I’m sure CSS will be able to fiddle with your suspenders FOC if you ask them.

Great Document! Thanks for that!

Yeah I agree. I’m still behind the perfomance this bike is designed for so don’t need to go crazy pn uprating it!

If you are going to run these settings I would suggest changing the fork oil too. The fork oil on a 7 year old bike is probably well cooked by now so those damping settings won’t work properly. Changing the fork oil is very easy to do yourself and fork oil doesn’t cost much.

Ah ok. I’ll dig out the Haynes Manual. I don’t have many tools to hand though but I’ll give it a go. Thanks…

Tip #1 - If you are going to do it the proper way (i.e. take the fork legs out of the triples), loosen the fork tops before you loosen the triple bolts.

Tip #2 - Work the inner tube in and out several times to pump out all the old fluid.

Tip #3 - It is worth giving Hagon a call and finding out what they charge for a fork spring and oil kit for your bike. I did it for my XT660 and it only cost £70. Best money I spent on that bike.

Thanks for the advice guys! I decided it was a bit hectic for me to do with my current ‘no tool/garage/paddock stand etc’ situation so booked it into my local guy for new springs (progressive) and oil.

All the work plus parts is going to work out far far less than a steering damper too so I almost feel like it’s free if you know what I mean? Wonder what I should spend the rest on?

Thanks again!

LOL, how about a round of beers…?

haha Good idea!
