Views on the VFR750

So the VFR750…

I’m looking at getting hold of one, probably a tatty one that needs a bit of work, on the cheap.

I’m looking for a bike I can use for regular motorway runs - comfy, efficient, good for cruising…

Does anyone have one, or ridden one in the past, that might be able to share their views on it?

Don’t need anything special just cheap, reliable and comfy at speed. Id also like to run heated gear off it, so how’s the generator output?

Any views or input greatly appreciated! I would post up a picture of a VFR750 but I can’t cos I’m on LB on an iPhone right now…

I think I can help here! I love mine, it’s a 1997 one with the twin headlights. Generator pumps 305 watts. we’ve gone on plenty of adventures.
it’s pretty racey when it needs to be, do you need that at all? if not then I’d suggest something more sensible, the fuel economy isn’t the best. maybe a deauville?

things to look for when buying an old one:
(1) the downpipes rot, especially at the collector box. check for leaks/ patched repairs.
(2) the stock honda regulator/rectifier has no cooling fins and overheats. under the seat, next to your right thigh, check it’s one with cooling fins, that means it’s been changed.

PS: the V4 sounds awesome after you change the stock can. do that.

Chap I know despatched one to 100000 miles . Dash lights and seized chain adjuster being the only faults I had to fix .

Thanks guys, great advice there… 100,000 miles is a nice round number! No valve adjustments required at all?
Will check for dodgy reg/recs and rusted downpipes… I don’t see why all bikes can’t be made with factory stainless downpipes and collector boxes. In fact I think it should be the law that they can’t make them out of useless ferrous metal that rusts and rots at the slightest sign of water.

I’m hoping to spot a 1990-1997 model going cheap for spares/repair, none around at the moment but I’m in no great rush…

And yes Groovy, I do need a little bit of sporty action from a bike. I’m only 24, I wouldn’t be seen dead on a dullsville :hehe:

I test road an 800 VTEC the other day, very nice and comfy with solid suspension but it doesn’t quite lunge for the horizon when you wind it on like my Ninja does… But I suppose it’s supposed to be a sports tourer not a sports bike. How do you get on with yours MeGroovy?

Well it was roughly that number , it only got removed from the road as he landed a despatch riders dream job and now they buy him a bike of his choice .

Cost and weight. Stainless is heavy than mild steel, and it costs more.

Stainless also is not rust proof, it is merely corrosion resistant, given time and conditions it will rot.

I doubt its a weight factor the difference is very very very small in the amounts your using to make an exhaust . It would be down in the an ounce or 2 area of difference . It will all be down to cost .

you can’t compare a ninja and vfr. the vfr has lots more torque and pulls from the midrange. I did 2-up going up a hill on the M5 (when it was closed) at 120 and it still had more to give.

If mine was in a better state I’d offer you a go on it but it’s got a wobbly front end
