V twins or Straight 4's?

This might sound daft, but in your opinions what’s the pro’s and conn’s for V-twins v Straight 4’s…

V’s have more midrange and generally a lot more torque

IL’s have their power higher in the rev range and generally rev higher

Pros for both but people say be aware of the torque of a V motor as its more likley to catch you out if your used to IL’s

I just love the sound and smoothness of an in-line 4

cant wait for the new r1

Horses for courses.

V twin for grunt, easy amiable riding, simplicity. (Er…Desmo’s sort of excluded.)

In line for the shear joy of a beautiful engine with much more “sports” character.

If I had the wad and room I’d own one of each. And a big single. And an parallel twin. Oh, and a BMW K75 triple.

Thanks to being reasonably skint, I don’t have angst about which bike to ride each day.

V baby…

i LOVE V-Twins!!

it stems from my first big bike, my SV6 fell in love with it, and got so used to to V engine, now i have the SVthou!

  • for Vee’s,

the sound, deep toned roar…the noise when you roll off the throttle…and the vibes!! it really feels like your at one with the bike and you know when your moving some! On IL4’s i found it didnt feel i was going fast, yet i was going some according to the speedo:w00t:

the engine braking is a bonus, once you get used to it;) the torque…instant go…most big V’s have 2 pipes…2 pipes rock:D

i just love it!

i have rode IL4’s, first time i rode a big IL4 was Photographichero’s Gixxa6, was funny, totally diffrent riding postion, went off down the road, braked changed down a gear…erm i kept going! wheres the engine braking!!?

i have rode a quite a few IL4’s, and i still prefer Vee’s…

Flat opposed twins rool

They’ve both got too many cylinders… moto’s are what the cool kids ride :w00t::D:cool:

They’re both brilliant, it comes down to personal choice. Don’t start an argument over what one’s better as it might as well be a question saying which colour is better, red or green?

Red :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve never ridden anything with more than two cylinders, so I can only really comment on the sound.

I absolutely love the V-twin for how it sounds. The only thing that comes close in my opinion is the R1, with its primal roar. I like encountering noisy R1s on my commute!

Everybody knows blue is the fastest colour, so no arguments about that :hehe:

I’ve never ridden a IL4 or V2, but I love the torque of my big single and the fact I get all the power from about 3k revs till the rev limiter kicks in at about 7k. It’s pretty much a flat power curve. That’s great for town riding and the bendy bits.
And they sound better than anything else

Oh dear, here we go again.

2 wheels = No matter the engine

I love V-twins, but I’m about to buy an IL4. Whatever I’m riding will blatantly be better than what every other fool is riding though obviously

Ratty that’s odd cos most say opposite between IL4s and twins.

I remember riding the Ducati 1098 around Cadwell in 07 and it was a fantastic experience because the bike’s engine is so calming compared to an IL4 (like my R1), that you just get on with riding the track and working out where you’re going.

The thing is, you’re still going as fast as you are on the IL4, but it just feels slower and sounds slower so you relax and just get around the corners.

I also rode an Aprilia RSV 1000 and made the mistake of doing 70 in a 30 because I had no idea I was going that fast until I looked down at the speedo.

V Twins are cool, but the bikes I like don’t have the ergonomics I could live with on a day to day basis (1098 and RSV).

Maybe Chunky is right and the TL 1000 is really the best V Twin sports bike. Especially if you’re used to Jap bikes as it has a familiar Japanese bike riding position (and not as extreme as an SP1 / 2).

Still, I love IL4s…The scream they make…The way you feel that you are going warp speed. I’d probably be faster on a twin, but they don’t excite me as much.

09 R1 for the win then

I don’t ever remember saying that:w00t:

Afro’s right. Vees do tend to be deceptive as you end up travelling faster than you think you are but by the same token they do feel more grunty than a smoother IL4 of the same power output.

I’ve yet to find a Jap IL4 with any sort of character, who knows, the new R1 might break the UJM mould;)

(UJM = Universal japanese Motorcycle)

In practice it’s a matter or personal taste really. Both have good and bad, not so much bad really.

Pros and cons?

Pros of a twin are packaging, and a tendency to produce more power at a lower engine speed. This can result in a lazy type of ride - the speed comes easy.

Cons: Can be a bit clunky, agricultural even. It’s all part of the character. Lower engine top speed mean you have less flexibility.

Pros of a 4: For the same displacement, will always produce more power than a twin, but often produce that power higher up the rev range. Tend to be smoother.

Cons: Arguably you might have to rev to get the engine working, but this is not always true.

I’m just about to go to V-Twin from IL4. Twins: the noise and grunt = bundles of character for me. That noise . . . oooooooh, that noise! (Thanks in part to Mr Termi and the absence of Mr Baffle!)

i’ve not used my bike this week but i started her last night for five minutes cause i was missing the noise:w00t: v-twins all the way!

il 4 mate…mine has got as much grunt as v twin and more reliable and also works in the winter:D:P

What about Kawasaki ninja IL4s chunks? they’ve got bags of charachter.
