Uneven tyre wear

Just been inspecting my fazer and I’ve noticed the front tyre is worn very unevenly. I checked around the wheel to make sure it wasn’t just a trick of the light or pattern, but no you can quite significantly see the wearing is definitely uneven throughout.

Before I take it to the Garage for repairs what is a possibly indicator for tyre wear on a bike? *Uneven suspension? Wheel Barrings? *

how big a diff is it? is it on the left or right?

was told once that it is natural to have slightly more wear on the right side of the front because we are in Uk so Right corners are longer as well as the fact we have loads of roundabouts

I had an odd wear pattern on my front tyre which was a result of a worn wheel bearing.

i had wear on left and a flat spot. it was my disc that was slightly buckled casuing the issue.

Do you feel any small vibes through bars?

Is it a Bridgestone BT-21?

Yeah, I do. I especially feel it when I’ve done long journeys.

Could be a slight buckle in the discs then… i only felt it when i had my summer glvoes, or no gloves, for a quick test ride.

i could never see the buckle until the discs were off and i attached them to my dads lathe and watched it wobble away!

Have you definately still got the stick on balance weights on the wheel? they have been known to come off!

Could just be the camber of the road, any pic’s.

had this with some Dunlops on my old ZX6 the front was the one that showed it up, made the bike handling awful. It appears in the tread patternt first and although the tyre was good it got noted on the MOT sheet, not a failure at that point as not bad enough. You would have thought I would have learnt my lesson but when I replaced the tyre (Same OEM model) it happened again!!

What tyres are they?

i’ve found, very often it’s riders’ technique that wears front tyres unevenly.
i can’t say that for certain without knowing yours, but often people take left turns ‘letting the bike turn’ and right turns countersteering heavily which wears tyres more. and vice versa.
but, i could be wrong.
also bt021 fronts are well known for shabby thread pattern causing it to wear before rears, just like the old dunlops d207s…

Its probably worth taking your bike into a decent tyre shop like FWR and let them check it over for you. Wont cost much and they should be able to tell you in a couple of minutes.

Apparently there was a large batch of fronts that were not up to scratch. They wore out very quickly into a 50p shaped profile. Mine got replaced at 7.5K the rear at 11K.

The D207 that I had on the rear was quite frankly enough to never ever consider having a dunlop again. It was bloody awful.

Im pretty sure it was 207’s on my old ZX6… my 10 however has Pirelli Diablo corsa 111’s and the main problem with these is life span rather than uneven wear :w00t:

I like the PIrelli a lot better though so no complaints  Probably going to try the newer version soon as mine need changing:http://www.pirelli.co.uk/web/motorcycle/tyres/diablo_rosso_corsa/my_diablo/default.pageWorth a punt on here finding what alternatives to fit:http://www.national.co.uk/

The Avon Viper I had on the front of my ZX12R wore unevenly. There were significant steps between the tread blocks, which would make a gentle front end wobble at about 50MPH on a gentle camber.

I took the bike in and got the front replaced (tyre). The guy in shop says there was nothing really wrong with it and couldn’t pick up anything from looking at it. However there’s something still odd about the handling of my bike, I can’t tell if it’s just me being paranoid or something about the bike but it isn’t handling right. I’ve noticed when turning in on right corner it doesn’t feel right (the right side is the side that wore out quickly). I have no idea if it’s just me being paranoid or what but something feels a bit iffy.

Is there anywhere I can take this to get investigated a bit better? I need to have more clarification. I’ve given it the once over myself but my knowledge on these matters isn’t even worth mentioning.

I had a feeling the guys in the garage didn’t really care to be honest.

do you check your tyre pressures?

I had a weird feeling front on my last bike and it turned out to be the wheel bearings, maybe have them checked (Although with hindsight I’d do it myself)

I’ve got to get a new front hoop for the FJR … it’s a BT021 and is completely b*lloxed on the right side. 5K miles.
