Tyres

Hi Hopefully someone on here will be able to help me, i need a new rear tyre for my SV650. Its currently running on the standard Dunlop (160/60/zr17) but i don’t know if these are the best tyres for it. All i do is commute each day on it so don’t want to spend the earth.

Any ideas?

Give Maxxis sports touring tyres a go. They are inexpensive but I have found them as good as the Bridgestone 020’s. I’ve got the touring tyre on the rear and sports on the front on my Triumph and am well pleased with them. FWR stock them.

Dunlop Roadsmarts/Michelin Pilot Road 2’s are both good tyres, but you pay for that.

The original Pirelli Diablo is still an excellent tyre, and probably cheaper than the above two

I hear good things about the maxxi’s but for me, Tyres are one of those things like brakes that are not worth skimping on… /shrug

I still got Diablos on both of my bikes. Great tyres! Probably gonna get something new next time … maybe 2CTs. We’ll see.

Tyre technology has moved on since the BT020… which has the feel of granite. Nothing other than Dunlop Roadsmarts for me; so good that i’ve had them fitted on the last 2 bikes I had (ZX6R and 929 Blade… so easily heavier and more powerful than the SV but done well). They stick like spunk on sheets and give PLENTY of feedback in winter.

I run Michelin Pilot Road 2 on my ER-6F. Previously run Bridgestone BT020 and BT021. The Michelins win hands down. Loads more grip, especially when cold. They keep their shape alittle better under lots of commuting miles. Mine are now 8,000 miles old and still a few thousand miles left on both ends, so slightly better life span too. Really good tyre to use for short journeys as they warm up fast and feel less lethal on cold winter roads.

I have pirelli diablos on my RSV 1000 and they’re far worse than the Michelins when its cold and wet.

dont touch maxxis with a barge pole…absolutely sh*te tyres, my tyre dealer - essential rubber- wont even stock them…they are that shocking!

ran Michelin Pilot Powers 2CT on my Old K4 650S…i run Michelin Pilot Road 2CT’s on my SV1000S…

Power 2CT’S are slightly softer, lil bit mopre grippy than the Road 2CT’s, but that means they waer a bit quicker, in teh summer i will run a Road 2CT rear and upfront a Power 2CT;)

Continental Attacks are pretty good, yet to try them on an SV but on a CBF500 Courier bike they were wicked, allowing silly lean angles, good feel from teh tyres and good wet weather grip.

what do you know you only ride in the summer.

why thank you tug:D

but you dont do corners…so what do you know:D:P

Another vote for road pilot 2’s (got some on a zx6), have done a couple of trackdays a bit of (fast)touring around wales and many weekend blasts on them.

Not the gripiest for track use, but nice and predictable.

They have worn very well as well - will be getting another set when these are dead.

Interested to know if you’ve actually tried them.

Know a few guys that run them on their GSX-R 1000 track bikes and they rate them pretty highly.

I’ve seen good reviews of them in the press too.

I’m talking about the Supermaxx Sports tyres that Guy Martin gave a good review for in Performance Bike.

I’ve seen a good review for using a Duck to scare Dogs off your garden but I don’t believe that either . . . Most reviews in magazines are based around who is paying the most for advertising or promising the most free goodies . . . I used to work for some computer magazines years ago and it was rife. Did the magazine’s test bikes suddenly start wearing Maxxis tyres by any chance ?

Look at the 2009 R1, last year, the best thing since the C50 and about to revolutionise biking and now it’s last years poor relation . . . the same thing has happened to the ZX6, R6, Ventura luggage, Scottoiler etc . . . the magazines change their mind so frequently you wonder if they ever even use the things they test.

As for a comment from Guy Martin . . . he’s hardly going to say it’s a crap product in a magazine is he ?

If there is one thing I have learnt about tyres, both car and bike, for road and track, it’s that you get what you pay for

michelin Pilot Road 2’s

3500 miles with tons of tread and shape left. like **** to a blanket in the dry and not much worse in the wet. Quick to warm up to.

What more could you want.

Another fan of Pilot road 2ct or Roadtarts ! (for road use)
