Tyre question

On the way home this evening, I picked up a fairy substantial nail right in the centre of my rear tyre.
I had to pull it out because it was hitting my rear hugger

The tyre is punctured, but its coming out fairly slowly so i managed to get home since i wasn’t too far away.

question is, before i take it to Protyre tomorrow morning, the tyre is a 180/55ZR17M/C (73W) and
according to Protyres website

Repair to Motorcycle tyres can be carried out subject to certain limitations. A motorcycle that does not have a ‘W’ speed rating can have a repair carried out in the tread area of the tyre subject to the size of the puncture and any associated damage inside the tyre.
There is no British Standard for carrying out repairs to Motorcycle tyres with a ‘W’ speed rating and therefore most of these tyres cannot be repaired.

Is this really the case?

if its not at the sidewall of the tire its fine to plug. dont know who protype is but if you are north then take it to Essential Rubber if you are south take it to FWR

The speed rating in your case is the Z - 180/55 ZR17 so you should be OK getting it plugged.

Balance the cost of repair against the amount of tread left on the tyre too :wink:

OMC Matt will do it…

I’d do it for you if I wasn’t ages away.

thanks all!
getting it picked up in the morning and will go from there. I thought the 73W was the speed rating

There’s loads of life in the tyre so hopefully it can be fixed
the nail was almost dead centre

The 73W is the load and speed rating …

73 = load rating (365kg)
W = speed rating for a 10 minute duration (168mph)

180 = width of tread
55 = height of side wall (% of tread width)
17 = rim diameter

So your tyre is 180mm wide with a 99mm side wall to fit a 17" rim and is good to carry 365Kg at 168mph in short bursts

All done. Thankfully the nail went straight in and didnt do any shredding so it was repairable.
Just as well since there is about 3000 miles plus left in the tread :slight_smile:
