Hi everyone,
I am a looking for my first bike, and so far two offers caught my attention. Both come from dealers : I’d rather avoid gumtree / ebay ads for a first time.
- Kawasaki ER-6n 2006, 16000 miles, £3000
- Honda CB500F 2007, 30000miles, £2500
Both are from London dealers, so I don’t expect the bargain of the year, but do you think these are descent prices ? I tend to think the ER-6n looks like a better deal, but I could do with of your input on that topic…
Many thanks,
Well a cursory glance on the tinternet threw up this straight away … so no I would say it was not a good deal .

I found this website pretty accurate when looking for a cbr600f:

Someone else posted it on another bike in the classified ads section here too.
The er6n is called ninja650r in the US btw. Unless it’s got some super special mods and stuff, you shouldn’t be paying more than the max price.
Sorry but that is a lot of money for a CBF500. They were £4000 new, so six years old and 30K miles. That is far too rich. And the ER-6n was £4500 new, again that is too rich. The ER-6n was revised twice, and new can be had for £5.5
I’ve actually just got my bike from Motorcycle Giant. They are decent guys and I think I paid a fair price for my bike ('97 cbr600 with some bells and whistles on 28k miles for 2k incl full service), someone chip in if I’m wrong. There’s bits and bobs I didn’t notice before in that the fairing was a tad cracked (nothing major) and one of the rear fairings is loose but it’s to be expected from such an old bike I think. Other than that bike rides well, at least I haven’t noticed anything in the last couple of weeks, and I’m quite happy with the purchase.
If you can afford a couple more hundred pounds, get the bike from a dealer and it’ll come with a 30 day warranty as well as more peace of mind. With private sales you sometimes don’t know what you’re buying into so unless you can bring a mate to check out the bikes you’re planning to buy, it can be tricky.
Thanks blu,
I am not sure that I understand : isn’t Motorcycle Giant a dealer ? Does it fall under the private sales category ? Did you get a warranty for your cbr600 ?
Yes, they are a dealer. I meant that comparatively, a private sale wouldn’t give you that warranty. All their bikes come with a 30 day warranty.

Can’t see the cbf500 on their official site though. Give them a call and come down to see them, they’re really friendly and will be happy to show you the bikes.
It can be daunting buying a bike with little knowledge.
You need to go and have a look at a few bikes, just to see the condition for the price and to get used to the situation.
Print of a used bike check list and work through it.
Not sure what other people think, but I’d not place to much faith or emphasis on the importance of a warranty from a dealer. Especially if the “cost” of this is paying £500+ over the top of a private sale.
You could look at finding a local mechanic to take a look at the bike with you, some will do inspections if you ask.
If you spot a bike for sale and want an opinion post it up.
Do you have a list of models you are interested in and a budget?
Yes, I’m looking for a 500cc / 600cc, £2000 max.
I’d like a naked, basic bike, but I’m open for any good deal. I’ll use it mainly in London, day trip over the week-end and the occasional trip back to my hometown in the North of France.
Potential models are the usual suspects for a beginner : CB500, CBF500, CBF600, ER-6N, Bandit.
I also like the BMW F800R and the Yamaha XJ6 better look-wise, but they seems to be more expensive on the used market, and for my first bike the look is not of a major concern.
I didn’t consider a BMW F650GS at first, but it looks like a descent choice too.
Of those listed I’d go for the CBF600. The 600 will have more power, and that 600 honda engine is bullet proof.
It is the bike I learnt riding on. I really like it ! Unfortunately it seems that there is an endless string of offers for a Bandit or a ER6, but the CBF600 are a bit more rare…
Have you tried going to dealers, telling them what you are after, but saying you must ride the bike.
I really think thats the best way to help you decide.
As long as the bikes in good nick, they are all nice enough bikes.
If you ride a few bikes, you’ll quickly decide which is for you.
See them in the flesh, and dont obsess on the web about them.
I know its a bit mean, but see them at the dealer, then go a see a few on sale privately. You’ll find a nicer one in better nick, for less money.
Of course I went to dealers and seen bikes. I just wanted to know what you guys think about these deals, price-wise.
