trip to the nurbergring

so after a chat with my mate we want to go now him in his mini cooper works special and me on the sv. its €145 for 8 laps and shocking prices if you damage the track or close it. my questions are what sort of insurance could i get if so how much, can it be done in 1 days or best going over 2. how safe is it out there as i know cars and bikes run at the same time etc?

It’s well scary out there, be prepared to be hussled by cars. Also the rules are that if something is coming from behind at a faster speed than you, you must indicate to the right and move over to let them pass. If you don’t and you get hit, it’s your fault and you pay the damage, track closure etc so use your mirrors.

That said, it is a great track. I would recommend you go during the week as at the weekend it’s packed and when people keep crashing, the track closes for long periods of time. Even when they re-open it’s only for cars initially to make sure there are no oil/petrol spills left on track. Often, by the time they let the bikes back out somebody else flippin crashes and the track closes again, lol.

Suprisingly 8 laps is actually quite a lot. I would wait until I get there before purchasing laps as there are often people who can’t use all the laps they purchase and sell the rest cheap. Some of the guys on my trip only did 1 lap and didn’t want to go back out :w00t:.

We just got back from a 5 day mini tour in the area. The Mosel and Rhine valleys are fantastic for biking, mixtures of every kind of road, fast 100mph sweepers and tight nagery stuff. The roads around Nurburgring are fantastic as well with lots of cars who want to ‘play’.

The track itself is fantastic, yes it’s hard to learn (if you can), but if you keep the speeds sensible then you can really enjoy it. It’s when people start chasing lap times and trying too hard for their own ability that it bites back. If you were running round the track on your own, or on a bike only track day, then it would be great. The problem is the cars, they can push a lot harder as the consequences for them getting a bit wrong are acceptable. You can fly past (most) of them on the straights but they are right next to you in the corners. Trust me, when a BMW M5 comes flying past, just as you are tipping in, and bounces his wheels across the kerbs right next to you it makes riding in rush hour London traffic look safe. Because of this you spend too much time looking in the mirrors so it’s really difficult to concentrate on your lines and cornering.

Be aware that it’s often closed for private tests so you need to check the website, and steer clear of weekends when you are likely to discover a coach full of Japanese tourists on the racing line.

One of my favourite bits was watching one of the passengers from the Ring Taxi throwing up at the side of the track!

There is a great website which tells you everything you need to know, including an excellent route to the circuit. [url]

I’ve been a few times in my car and its usually a struggle to all 8 laps! I usually go at easter over the long weekend and its rammed with loads of crashes to go with it but some of stuff you see there is amazing. Just take it easy and drive within your limits and you’ll be fine, theirs no prizes for a fast lap - just enjoy it for it is

Theres loads of people that are happy to take you round as a passenger if you wanted, I’ve been round in a 996 Gt3Rs and it was amazing in the hands of someone that really knows the track. Loads of regulars on www.northloop.co.uk.

I shall beat u there
